Does anyone know if we can deduct our travel expenses for traveling from our taxes? I heard you could do this for job search related travel but what about med school?

Nope. When I was going through turbotax, it explicitly stated that we aren't allowed to. 🙁

I can confirm that, my tax accountant said that med school application expenses can NOT be deducted.

Agree with the others. You don't get a tax deduction for school related expenses or travel when the school is preparing you for a new career.

(Caveat -We are all assuming you are an American, if you are canadian, etc I don't know what the rule is)

Just keep it simple and claim your dog as a dependant, maybe even your cat or goldfish.

I was joking around one day with a tax prep guy and asked if I could deduct my pets. He said you can if you can find a doctor to say that you need them for mental health reasons!

Are you all in school?

If you are working and it is plausible that your job has travel, you might get away with deducting them that way. Just be careful, it wouldn't be fun to get hauled off the jail while you are in med school for tax fraud.

No, I'm working fulltime. That plan wouldn't have worked for me because all our work travel (and any IRS goodness that is related to that) is done directly through the company...so it wouldn't really fly if I tried to pass off plane tickets on my personal credit card as work expenses. Who knows though, for some people who aren't in a giant corporation, this might work.

I work for a pretty big corporation as well. However, we get the option of either booking our own travel, which sometimes I do or using American Express Travel. Hence, I can finagle it a little.

You could ask your accountant if you have one.
