Good morning!

I was wondering if someone could help me out with this problem. I understand why A2=25 A1 but I am still puzzled as to how they got x2=x1/25. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Remember that a liquid has a constant volume and cannot be compressed. If you push 5L of hydraulic fluid down on one side, 5L of fluid is going to pop up on the other side. It has no place else to go.

How much volume gets pushed down on the right? A1 x X1. How much volume gets pushed up on the right? A2 x X2.

These are equal, so

A1 X1 = A2 X2
X2 = X1 (A1 / A2)
X2 = X1 / 25
