I don't know why but Passage 2 is killing me. I know "protein turnover" isprotein intake and output, but how would you calculate the rate? output/input? I'm talking about question 9 where it asks to rank the organs in accordance to their daily protein turnover. Also, Q7 says to calculate efficiency of protein digestion (equation is protein absorbed/total protein avalable) I know protein absorbed = 160 because of the diagram, but how do you calculate protein available?

curious..what's the final answer for the question asking about protein turn over?

The answer to your questions are completely dependent on the figure provided in the passage. Nobody can help you unless you provide that image.

If I remember correctly, all you have to do is subtract the consumed protein (which you get from the figure) from the protein input (which they give you), which leaves ou with the protein available. The hardest part of this passage was interpreting that image. I only remember it because it took me forever (way longer than 7 minutes) to finish.

Premedicine, c'mon and post the image! AAMC loves these crazy images that precede simple solutions. 🙂

Haha, sorry, I hadn't logged on in a couple of days. Anyways, I attached the picture. 2 questions i didn't understand:

1) Given the following equation (effeciency=protein absorbed/total protein avail), what is the effecinecy of protein digestion and absorption in the gut?
-Answer: 160/170. I'm really confused how both numbers were determined. I thought absorbed would be 100?

2)Rank in increasing order the organs or tissues according to their amount of daily protein. Answer: white cells, liver, muscle, gut. How do I calculate the turnover for each?

Looks like they get it thus:
absorb: 160. That's easy
But ate 100. So where that 70 come from?
That 70 comes from the secretion of proteins back into your gut to digest the 100 gm of protein! and you can see that you only actually "lose" 10 gm in the fecal matter.

As for the 2nd part, you can see that 20 gm goes to white cells, 25 to liver, 50 to muscle and 70 to the gut, so that's the order. No calc necessary.

Sorry I'm still confused. So he consumes 100gm of protein, but where did the 60 come from? and still don't understand the 170 value. 😕

And for the 2nd part, for the "gut" you got 70 because it states that the turnover is 70kg for humans?

he eats 100, but his body puts in 70 (like peptidases, etc)
so you now have 170, body takes BACK160 from the small intestine
****s out 10.

Maybe I'm getting confused of the def. of protein tunrover. Wiki says "balance of protein synthesis and degredation". Humans have 70kg protein turnover. Is that that a sum or rate?
