i am going through TBR Gen Chem 1 and they are using really specific calculations to get their answers. i was under the impression we are supposed to avoid doing that, should i be using a calculator to go over the in chapter problems?

Absolutely not. I have yet to come across anything in TBR that requires the use of a calculator.
