TBR O. Chem. Question 2.26 states: "The extra CH2 group associated with the ethylphenol compared to methylphenol is found in the 2-2.5 ppm region, not the aromatic region." Why exactly is that? I thought the 2-2.5 ppm region was designated for alpha hydrogens? Sorry I know this is probably trivial, but I was just curious. Thanks in advance 🙂

Normal RCH3 hydrogen atoms would show up around 0.9 ppm, but the close proximity of the RCH3 group in ethylphenol to the conjugated pi bond system (each H is only 3 bonds away from the ring, close enough to cause shifting) causes it to show up more downfield, around 2-2.5 ppm. Not sure if you were looking for more info than that, but that's how I'd explain it.
