So I'm having trouble finalizing my decision between the two schools. With the deadline approaching I have to get it together ASAP. Which would you choose and why ?

Edit to add: I am from NYC , my SO lives in NYC, as does my immediate family, I am a little older and have been working prior to starting med school

TCMC

pros: Got a great vibe of a strong community feel here, very unique curriculum which I think I would enjoy, P/F, cost of living in the surrounding area is cheap, great match lists (for what it is worth)

cons: High tuition, not much to do in Scranton

NYMC

pros: partial scholarship would make it much cheaper, closer to NYC (where I am from), great match list (again, for what it is worth), can do 3/4 year rotations in NYC (which would help make connections should I choose to stay in NYC... which is my plan)

cons: Dorm style living ( I am nontrad and graduated college a few years ago), expensive cost of living in surrounding areas, not P/F, I have heard mixed things about how collaborative students are and that the testing schedule can be a bit crazy

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I would go with NYMC. Cheaper, been around longer, has a fairly decent reputation and your SO lives there! GL!

I would go to NYMC. Your cons seem like inconveniences rather than deal-breakers. It's cheaper, in the location you want, MUCH more established, and their anatomy practicals are multiple choice! Doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks guys for your input. Just to give a sense of difference:

TCMC is about 230,000 for tuition alone for four years

NYMC would be about 135,000.

So I guess it's a no brainier here lol (but I would still like more feedback from others)

From the op it doesn't seem like you're hyped on tcmc (not $100k worth of hype). The dorm style living at nymc is not something you're locked into correct? Pick nymc and don't look back. If you have any remote interest in matching in nyc, it's a no brainer.

Yeah I don't have to live in the dorms. However, rent nearby is a bit expensive so it would be cost effective to stay on campus.

The thing with TCMC is I got a really great vibe from the school, seems like a very nurturing environment. That huge difference in cost though... not sure if "nurturing" is worth that much more. I didn't really pick up that vibe when I visited NYMC. However, I also didn't get a chance to see students in their element (campus tour was by faculty and I didn't see too many students around).

If cost was exactly the same at both I probably would swing TCMC but I just cant wrap my head around the full COA being 85k a year... (plus, I would like to match NYC so NYMC is a huge plus in that sense).

just curious, was your scholarship at NYMC need based? do you think I am kind of crap out of luck for getting one since I was only recently accepted? haha

Hey it definitely wasn't need based. I just got an email that I got one. I don't know if they are still giving them out (or how it works). I assume if someone who was selected for a scholarship withdraws from the school, they will give it to someone else.

Hello!

As a current M1 at NYMC, I felt like it would be good to post my input here...

You state that you like TCMC for their good vibe and nurturing environment. I just wanted to add that after being at NYMC for a year, I can tell you that we ALL help each other out. It is a phenomenal environment to be in, because we all want to see each other succeed. We have had classmates make study guides, we have had second years pass down resources they have procured... One of my classmates even just made a practice neuroanatomy lab exam for the class in preparation for our final next week!

We have a really cool community. We almost have to, or we would be miserable, because there isn't much else around haha.

Also, I live off campus, and it can be a little spendy, but there is also a lot of good housing that is a little more affordable around, you just have to keep an eye out for it, and be patient. We also have an off campus housing report that is generated every few weeks: Google: NYMC Housing and click on first link --> in menu on left click on off campus resources --> "latest housing report."

Good luck, and hope to see you in August!

Your response couldn't come any sooner. I actually had to choose between NYMC and another school. I chose NYMC and your post has been helpful. Can I PM you with some questions?
