How can I find out what units / bases are traditionally TDA or TOE units? When you choose a base in your wish list, aside from location what can separates them? Some bases have speciality programs does that influence the dentists work or lessens it? I am a Loma Linda 06 graduate. I am considering the army. I heard the army has bases in europe. Will you get more work experience there or here in the USA. Can I have help. Thanks Jack..

Couple of things about terminology...army installations are called posts, air force and navy installations are called bases.

On each army post are a multitude of individual units, and depending on the unit's function, they're designated as 'table of distribution and allowances' (TDA) or 'table of organization and equipment'.

The largest TDA unit is DENTAC (Dental Activity) and each major installation usually has one. TOE units include medical support companies (as part of a suport battalion), or a combat support hospital.

You can choose what post you want to go to, which is still just a wish list, but you really can't dictate where and what unit you want to go to.

In my experience, the presence of a residency program did not limit my practice. The extent of your practice is determined by your clinic's mission and your commander's good graces.

You'll get experience anywhere, Europe or US.

No way to know ahead of time if you will be assigned TOE or not. You may go to a base that has a TOE unit (many do).

You may begin working in the DENTAC initially, but after a while you may be assigned my the Commander there to go to the TOE.
