Hey guys!

I wanted to start a thread with interesting TED talks. There are so many great ones, it's hard to wade through them all...So I figure the SDN community could form a pool of the best ones!

When posting a TED talk, please say who gives it and give a short blurb about it.

Here's a great one by Ben Goldacre. It's titled "Battling Bad Science", and it's about some of the ridiculous studies you hear, such as how "red wine prevents breast cancer":

This is a good idea! I'll watch a couple later and post about them.

👍 I love these videos.

I watched this one a while ago after I read Aubrey de Grey's book: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iYpxRXlboQ

It's basically about the science of immortality and his ideas on ways to combat death. He thinks within 25 years, we will have the technology for humans to live an average of 125 yrs.

D'oh! I just reposted one that was already posted, haha, never mind.

I just watched the Aubrey de Grey video on aging, Mbeas, and it's incredible. He makes some very interesting points, one of the most interesting of which is what he calls "evolutionary neglect". How we are at a point in evolution where we care about aging more than our genes do! Consciousness furthering lifespan over unconsciousness.

Also, he has a brilliant beard and voice.

Who wouldn't want a chickenosaurus?

I love these. It opens the mind to so many cool possibilities and realities in science.

I LOVED the chickenosaurus idea. Molecular biology ftw!!!

Glad you enjoyed it 👍

You should consider reading "Ending Aging". It's pretty incredible stuff.

This is absolutely a must watch for anyone within the medical community. I've watched a lot of TED Talks (will link others later) and it's not often a presenter gets a standing ovation. Dr. Verghese did because he made some very daring assertions given his audience.

"Modern medicine is in danger of losing a powerful, old-fashioned tool: human touch. Physician and writer Abraham Verghese describes our strange new world where patients are merely data points, and calls for a return to the traditional one-on-one physical exam."

It's short and worth the watch!

I love Verghese's work. I was introduced to it during my KCUMB interview, actually!

Considering his Ivy League stature I feel like he has really stepped out on a limb to make some of the assertions he does. Stanford is, of course, on the cutting edge of technology and research. However, he states in that lecture that the patient in the computer is being given excellent treatment while the patient in the bed is wondering where everyone is.

I've got a tremendous amount of respect for his opinion - I hope he writes more than he has.

Not sure if someone posted this one or not, but I love it. Ben Goldacre is crazy awesome.

One of my cool future DMU classmates talked about how she burns TEDmed audio to a CD and listen to them in the car during long drives. I'm actually looking forward to the 16+ hour drive to Des Moines now!!! Can't wait to listen to all of the TEDtalks and TEDmed discussions in the car.
