Thr article gives me the idea that this patient's outcome likely could not have been changed by much of anything.

Do I want "tele-ICUs?" No.

From this limited information, I don't think the 10 minute delay was the proximate cause of death. Sort of seems like there was plenty of substandard care to go around.

I actually do like tele-critical care but not as a primary model. We use tele-ICU in our hospitals that don't have real ICU...more of an ICU light setup. No vented patients (other than chronic sometimes), one pressor that the emergency physician thinks will come off in the next day. That sort of thing. Hospitalist still manages but they can get a video critical care consult from one of our ICU docs in the tertiary care places. I also probably wouldn't admit someone this sick to one of these sites.

I wish I could say it surprises me that a hospital would put lives at risk to make more money. But it doesn’t.
