is it acceptable/advantageous to say during the interview of your top school that you guarantee you will go to the school if accepted? i have heard of letter of intents and such but this would be more efficient and direct seemingly; anyone do this before?

Yep and I was actually rejected from that school. You can say whatever you want but if its not a binding contract of some kind its really worthless. Adcoms know how the game is played.

ADCOMS definitely know how the game is played. The problem with you saying that is that there is going to be many many kids saying the exact same thing, and as an ADCOM you gotta figure out which kids actually mean it and which kids just want multiple acceptances/ a back up option. Unless you can REALLY come off as sincere......

I wouldnt say that if I was you. Maybe say how much you love the school and make sure to ASK THEM QUESTIONS. Half my interview was me asking them things about rotations, volunteer opportunities etc and showing them I was excited about those things. That is definitely the way to show them you are very interested and would attend if accepted.

Just some food for thought

Do not say that. Adcoms here that all the time and most of those kids end up going elsewhere. I said that during my interview at dcom last year and was waitlisted. Even though if I was accepted I would be there right now. After reapplying I got accepted to lecom and didn't even attend my dcom interview. Just goes to show you. I ended up liking lecom as a school better.

We know how the game is played and we know that you'll lie, if necessary, to sound good. I have fellow interviewers who ask questions like "with lots of acceptances, would you come here?" and naturally, the answer is 100% "yes". And then I tear my hair out for my colleague giving away such a softball question.

And yes, we all know you've applied to MD schools first, and the vast majority would go to an MD school over a DO school, but in the end, we still get great students. It's part of the game...nothing personal on either side.

Don't say it. Interviewers can smell brown nosers a mile away. It'll be better for you to be genuine and honest, rather than spout off a bunch of contrived lines that they've no doubt heard 10000 times that same day.

Do ask questions though. Nothing betrays genuine interest like a few good questions.

to answer the the title of the tread, you should definitely look them in the eye and say, "I am your top choice." Schools dig that kind of thing.

I actually said this at my PCOM interview 2 years ago...because it was true. I told the interviewers about the fact that I own a home in the Philly burbs and that if accepted I would definitely attend. But that situation is different than a random kid coming to a school in a city where they have no ties and claiming they are a top choice.

i basically said that to DMU last week for the same reason. but i agree, some los angeles california kid saying DMU is his dream school is likely a load of crap.

I told AZCOM that they were my top choice in the interview because they are. I hope that isn't a problem!!

Its not a problem..but it isnt going to do much for you. A letter of intent is slightly better...at least you can list some attributes that make it feel like home to you etc.

i take offense to this statement being from LA and rly digging the DMU curriculum and what they have to offer but then again I have also lived in places smaller than Des Moines for a few years and am used to it lol

I took a break from college when I realized engineering isnt for me and decided to draft into the IDF (I am American born)....hopefully some schools will be impressed to see an IDF combat medic applying 🙂
my actual term of service was may 2007-may 2009
u can PM me if you wanna know more...id post it but some people on the forums might be anti-israel and I don't want to offend anyone or start any political debate

didn't mean to offend....or did I? I am not saying your "top choice" comment would be untrue, just that it would be less believable from a school's POV.

and if you are really offended, I understand. My wife tells me that she is the only one who doesn't think I am an a-hole. True love right there.
