Hello All,

So I decided to post this question here instead of the Postbaccalaureate form because I figured most of you may have already made it through your post bacc studies. I've also searched long and hard for more information about both schools post bacc programs and either there is none, regarding Duquesne University, or its pretty old, regarding Temple.

I would like to know if anyone can give me their honest opinions about each schools post bacc program, hopefully coming from first hand experience. The pros and cons, anything you wish you would have known before attending, how they've affected your med school acceptance or rejection, your personal stats entering the program etc.. Like I've said, i searched pretty long and hard regarding these programs, if you can find a recent review of one of the programs circa 2013 please provide the link.
So the question is in regards to Temple, Drexel and Duquesne, but I will also be applying to Uconn and American. Please feel free to provide information about those schools also.

This community has truly been a blessing. Thanks again for your help!

Hi, yes i hear this often. although they do say that some get matched in the us. Did you go for post bacc or medical school? And if you did what was your experience?

Where did that comment come from? I kept reading your OP over and over looking for any mention of the Caribbean, and couldn't find one.

Anyways, Duquesne's program is pretty nice and they do have connections with Temple med, so that's a plus. That said, I hear its pretty expensive. I've known people who've done post-bacs at all three of these places, and while it has helped some it has done little or nothing for others. It really depends on what your stats are going in.

If you are a little low on the GPA side or if you have a low MCAT, and are going to use the program to better prepare or something like that, then it might be worth it, but if you are coming in with an especially low GPA, I think those programs are essentially a money drain.

While I'm sure all three do an excellent job of preparing you for med school, I'm not sure if say going to the Drexel program would give you a much better shot at going to Drexel med or the Temple program for Temple med.

Anecdotal, but one person I know that went through the Drexel program is at a DO school now and the other just finished up at the Caribbean (both did well, but for the latter entering stats were pretty low - 3.0-3.1ish). The person I knew at the Temple program got more love at Drexel than they did Temple. I'm sure there were other factors but that was just their experience.

I will say, that if you have say a 3.3-3.4 GPA and really want to stand out for an MD program, doing well at any of those would be a good ticket, provided you apply early and broadly. That said, doing poorly at any of those programs is also a very effective way of guaranteeing that the Caribbean will be your only option.

Hi! Thank you so much for your post! Right now my undergrad gpa is exactly a 3.0. I took all of my chemistry classes and got mostly b's and c's. I was in Hunter's post back program years ago but I never took a class, I didn't like the structure and there was no support. I took one of the physics classes and unenrolled because the professors weren't welcoming to postbacc's and it was a little unorganized. I stared a masters program in psyc, my current gpa is a 4.0, which doesn't matter to the postbacc program. But I know I don't want to do psychology, I really want to practice psychiatry, which was my plan all along. During undergrad I explored all types of jobs and things and I wasn't focused, I wish I waited until later on in life to do school. But fast forward 6 years later, a Consulting job in Healthcare and some business experience, I know I can tackle medical school. I'm ready to study, and I have a new thirst for knowledge. Can you believe that I did not study at all during undergrad. I went to class and went and took the tests!!! Gen chem - Organic chem I honestly have no idea how I passed, but I know If I study I will ace my classes. I just want a structured program and I'm moving back to PA, so I think a supportive postbacc program will boost my chances for med school. I just wanted to get reviews , thoughts, and opinions on the programs. I may not even get accepted into any, but we'll see.

Temple's Post-bacc has a guarantee into Temple Med if you get over a 30 on the MCAT and over a 3.5 in the program. Everyone I know in the program got the gpa, the ones who didn't make it were because of the MCAT. I wasn't in the post-bacc myself, but my roommate was.

Thank you kid a and slak3r

kid a this is what makes temple so appealing to me. It's my top choice, but I'm just not sure that I'll get in with my stats.

Slak3r thank you for your review on Drexel. It does get a bad rep. I haven't seen a review that their post bacc program is as good, but that's actually the second good ims review that I've seen.
