I live in NE Phila and only applied to these two schools. Jefferson actually impressed me more but I need to take like 3 classes in the summer to fill prereqs. Temple was my first choice when I started out from high school. Can anyone give me any reason as to why Jeff or Temple?

Jefferson impressed me so much more than Temple. Jefferson is big into research and the people there were wonderful. If I was only accepted to those two schools, I would go to Jefferson hands down. I have already been accepted at Temple. So now I just have to wait. even though you would have to take 3 classes over the summer...Jefferson is worth it, i think.

I used to work at Jeff and then at Temple and let me tell you something...research at Jeff is not good anymore. They are losing a lot of great scientists, many to Temple. My boss left Jeff and I went with him to Temple (he left because Temple gave him a lot more money, tenure, and has better facilities), so did a large group which brought in a lot of money to Jeff. There are others planning on leaving as well. Temple is throwing money and tenure at PIs because they want to become a great research institution (it is already pretty good as is) and want to fill their new building up. Jeff hospital is great but so is Temple's. I got into both and will be going to Temple. The only thing about Jeff is that the area it is in is much much nicer. If you want to do research, though, do not go to Jeff.

I'm a soon to be P2 (yay) at Jeff and I do research with one of our pharmaceutical science professors. I don't exactly know how research at Jeff overall is... but I think research is what you make of it. I only started researching with this prof in March... and only did 3hr/week (volunteer) bc school is hectic enough. Keep in mind that once you're in school.. theres little time to do serious research. Now i'm getting a stipend to research with him during the summer. I did research at Rutgers in undergrad and i'm liking the research I do here A LOT more simply bc theres no technician work that I have to do... I go in, work on my experiment (a project he assigned me) then I leave. My main objective is to learn different assays that I haven't done before and i'm getting to do that at Jeff.

I think both Jeff and Temple are good schools... I'm from jersey, didn't bother to apply to temple simply bc of the area... I just don't feel safe there. (A month after taking my PCAT there, a girl was assaulted at 6pmish in the same building...).

Jefferson really impressed me when I interviewed.. loved the faculty, the area... and after the 1st year, I still love the school and would def come here if I had to do it again.

In your situation however... 3classes over summer is a lot of time & money. If I was in your position with the 3classes... I would go with temple... unless I felt really strongly about jeff over temple.

Good luck with the decision!

I'm sure Joxer chose a school already but if I were in his/her situation, I would choose Temple because it's fully accredited and cheaper than Jefferson (for in-state). I find it rather humerous hearing all these people on SDN talk about the Temple area like it's a war zone because I didn't think it was that scary. Granted, I didn't walk around there at night but it would be foolish of me to walk around any urban city in the middle of the night.

I did, however, like the facilities at Jefferson MUCH better than at Temple. I thought the classrooms and the labs at Temple were really old and cramped. Even the students giving us the tour, if you can even call it a tour, weren't too ecstatic about the facilities either.

Maybe bc 1. i'm a girl and 2, grew up in suburbia... but I think temple is ghetto. A notch better than USP... not as bad as camden... but comparable to newark NJ. Jefferson's area is 10x nicer.

ADN1226, I am looking at Jefferson or Umich. What are your thoughts? I'm also from NJ. what would you do, in light of your experience at Jefferson? many thanks.

Well, I assume that you got into both schools..so congratz! I attend Jefferson and it's great there. What I have heard in the past from students who have interviewed at both schools is that Jefferson faculty members were more attentive during the interview process while Temple faculty don't seem to care.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Jefferson requires a 3.0 GPA to stay in the program while Temple requires a low to mid 2 (I forgot). Class size at Temple is approximately 250 while Jefferson admits roughly 75 students = smaller student:teacher ratio. For our first year at Jefferson, the majority of the classes seem like a repeat of the last year of my undergrad - full of upper division sciences - whereas, Temple students dive right into pharmacy related coursework.

However, being a brand new program, Jefferson is able to incorporate important things like IPPE into the school year, instead of requiring you to do them during the summer. And most obviously, Jefferson is brand new and continues to undergo changes to better the program. Temple has been around for a long time and the program is probably more rigid, leaving small room for change. Good luck with your decision! I don't think you can go wrong with either schools.

Thanks so much guys. I chose Temple because I just don't have the time to take more classes and I need to get a job over this summer because I don't have any money. I consider myself lucky to get into both schools and am really excited to finally continue on my path to becoming a pharmacist.
