Still making some final decisions, but wanted to get this thread started to see if anyone else has settled on Temple for the incoming 2008 class!

👍

I applied EDP and was accepted, so that's where I'm going.
I did my ug there and have lived in the Philly area my whole life.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the school or the area.

It's my only acceptance so far, but I'll almost certainly go to my state school if accepted. By the way I've been freaking out about tuition lately- It's pretty outrageous for oos.

umm. . . yea. that's a pretty big drawback. i can tell you without a doubt that if I get into Baylor or UT Houston (my top choice state schools) i will not be attending Temple.

I also heard they don't have much in the way of scholarship/grant money.

Also heard this same sentiment.

The cost of attendance is scary. As an OOSer, I believe you can claim PA residency after 12 months. But even then, in-state tuition is also well above the advertised cost of other schools. 😱

We were told point blank at the finaid presentation that becoming a PA resident is pretty impossible. From the limited reading I've done, you cannot become a resident for academic purposes. You must live in PA for 12 months prior to matriculation and prove your intent to reside in PA (drivers license, voter registration...).

Where did you guys hear of the limited scholarships they offer?
Btw I called them last week and was financial aid package will not be released until june. I thought the last day to choose a school is May 15th. Does that mean we're supposed to choose the school w/o finaid information available??

I read it on a website and heard as much from a friend of mine that goes there.

Apparently, he had a renewable scholarship that one day just went away because of lack of funds.

I'm pretty sure that in PA you have to be a resident before you apply in order to qualify as in state at any time. The only exceptions may be if you have a spouse who works in PA or if you buy a house. Basically something that makes you pay a bunch of taxes.

The tuition is higher even for in-state because Temple is not really a "state" school. It only gets a small portion of money from the state. PA stinks because there is no state school where you can attend for cheap.

yea, i thought temple was private and i never recall seeing an "instate" vs. "OOS" price like I have at my state schools.

It's technically a land grant institution. Same as Penn State.
The tuition is somewhere around $5k less for instate.
Not like other places where there is a $20k or $30k diff.

I remember the difference as 17k (50k vs 67k). Can anybody else weigh in on this?

Tuition with university fees:

In-state $38,378
OOS $46,880
I copied this directly from the Temple financial aid website. So, the difference is less than $10k.

Obviously, there aren't living expenses included but that would bump both budgets up by the same amount.

Not sure why there is not much Temple info. There is some good info about some of their residency programs if you search around. I loved my time there as an UG, but that was a dozen years ago. 😱

does anyone know where is the best place to live??????? and how much is it going to cost> Does Temple have a list?

There are a number of options. You can live in center city and take the subway to school or you can live in East Falls/Manayunk area and drive. Those seem to be the most popular options for med students.

Take a look at this blog from the 2011 class.

If you have questions about any areas you find, feel free to ask. I've been in Philly my whole life.

I'm sorry my friends, but I have been accepted to my top choice which is also one of my state schools (Baylor). Barring any unusual circumstances, this is where I will matriculate.

Good luck at Temple!

How come there aren't any Temple students on SDN? I never see their feedback. 😕

Temple 4th year here, and as usual, always willing to answer any questions etc.

Hard to believe there is a class entering 2008 and here I am graduating already!

1) Pretty hard to become a PA resident if you're not one already. I think it can rarely be done if you buy a house or something of that nature, but I wouldn't bank on it.

2) As said above, many people live Manayunk, Roxborough, East Falls, etc. vs Center City. I lived in Roxborough, but there are many good apartments to live in any of these locations.

3) Tuition usually does go up every year. During my time at Temple it was about a 5k difference in-state vs not, but I guess now it is increasing more. Hard to believe. There are some scholarships out there, but in general not huge.

Hi guys! Congrats!! I saw a complaint about no temple students posting....I'm a temple first year. I'm living in east falls (near manayunk) and love it, but a lot of my friends do live in center city. I'm so glad I picked this school! Hope to see you next year and if not good luck at the school you choose!

temple 3rd year med student here. haven't been on this in forever! feel free to message me any time with questions--i'm very busy but i'll get back to u

I loved Temple when I went there, but I was a little put off by the price as wellas the fact that its nearly impossible to get in-state residency and the lack of scholarship opps. I'm OOS and cost of attendance is like $70000/ yr???

Hey guys.... just bought a place in Roxborough. 😀 3 beds/ 1.5 bath. Starting Temple med in 08 and looking for a roommate(s) to help split costs. Interested, give me a call XXX-XXX-XXXX

Ooh . . . bought a place? Nice. Roxborough is a pretty nice area, I was happy with it for the first two years at Temple.

hey out there!

Temple's my o
only acceptance so far too. But I really liked it so that's ok by me. I'm still open to other interviews and am going to Chicago to interview at Rush soon. Anyone heard any comparisons between Temple and any chicago area schools? On paper Rush and Temple seem to have similar profiles and resources as far as education goes. Trying to gauge which is 'better.' We'll see if I like freezing my toes off in Chicago next week... :scared:

bump.

i now have an @temple.edu email address. 😀 weirddd, i know.

Hey all,
Im from SoCAL I got accepted to Temple, Drexel, and SUNY downstate. I still have to interview at jefferson. So far I am leaning toward Temple the class seems connected vibrant and fun. Im excited about moving to philly I wanted to start building some connections with you guys. I love playing soccer and volleyball and at one point played professionally overseas, I love outdoor activities, and I am excited to experience to philly nightlife.

hey Doctalove911 - I've been in Philly my whole life. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the area.

I'd pick Temple over Drexel, but I can't really comment about the other schools. Jeff is a good school as well.

Wdup gman,
One thing im curious about is where to live. If i went to Temple the north philly area didnt seem to welcoming. I love being in the hustle and bustle of city life but would rather live somewhere a bit more comfortable. Where would you suggest living, would i need a car, and do u think it would be better to buy a place rather then lease apartments for four years. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I wouldn't live right by the school. Maybe a couple of students do, but I think it's pretty rare. The two most popular options are center city or somewhere in the Manayunk/East Falls area. Center city is about 15-20 minutes away via the subway. You wouldn't need a car. Manayunk/East Falls would most likely require a car. Probably a 20 minute drive. It is possible to use public trans from there, but it's more of a pain. If you are looking to buy a place, it's a good buyer's market in the area right now. If you can find a roommate to share some expenses, buying a place might not be a bad idea. I'd probably rent unless you plan on staying in the area for more than 4 years. Given the current market there's no guarantee that the home will appreciate that much and you'll have to deal with selling it when you move. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

For those familiar with Philly, the house is near 20th and South St. in Center City. Great, safe, centrally-located neighborhood close to Rittenhouse Sq

My neighbor is a Temple med student--the place is convenient to campus by car or subway.

If you have a car, there is ample street parking in the neighborhood.

hey, i'm a temple 2nd year, soon to be 3rd year...i've lived at the Henry on the Park apartments in Roxborough for the past two years. Feel free to PM me with any questions (esp if you're interested in living at the HOP), i'm not on here as much since I got into med school 🙂 i'll try to answer in between studying for boards...good luck!

Anyone know how much the parking is at temple and if it is worth it to have a car there. I currently pay $250 a year, but I'm sure its a lot more in Philly. If I get a car, I'll probably have to buy it there because I'm pretty sure I'm not driving my current car like 3000miles there.

Hey, temple 4th year here. PM me if you want advice on how to get in state tuition. I was able to get it and it saved me a lot of money.

Anyone hear back about financial aid yet? I filled out the fafsa a while back, but haven't gotten any news still.

I was told that they need to see 1040s and W2s from student and parents before they will determine any university funding. Other than that, the government loans are pretty much the same for everyone (unless you qualify for grants).

I thought they would process everything based on the FASFA information and then just use the other stuff as backup documentation. I guess this is not the case.

Hi everyone! I just got accepted Tues. I want to see the financial aid package before making any decisions. 😉 but I love Philly, so we'll see.

Wow, they must have really loved you to accept you when they were only interviewing for waitlist positions! Congrats!!

Thanks scowdeva! I'm really excited about being accepted to Temple. I hear that they don't give much aid in the form of scholarships, but we'll see what happens in the coming months. Does anyone know when we'll hear about aid? Maybe at 2nd look?

note: just saw the previous post about it coming out in June. I hope that turns out no to be the case.

I wish we could breathe some more life into this thread 😛 .

Does anyone plan on traveling for their last summer or for rotations? I think I would like to go abroad.

Did anyone else go to second look?

Sorry I didn't see you gman. 😳 There were a lot of people there. But I'm definitely more excited about Temple now.

Went to Second Look and I think Temple is an absolutely awesome school with some amazing people there. However, I just got my financial aid package and it is completely loans. If I were independently wealthy, this would be okay; however, I am not, so I will likely be withdrawing.

It's too bad, because I was/am thoroughly in love with the school, but the financial situation is just a bit too much to handle, given other cheaper options. 🙁

Sorry I missed you JessieLee.

I was at the second look and it reinforced my feelings about Temple.
I went there for ug and postbacc so I'm a little biased.

I'm definitely going there. Hope to see some of you in August. 😀
Any out of towners feel free to PM me if you want any details about Philly in general.

Wow you received your package already. At 2nd look they gave an estimate of early May for fin aid and late april for scholarships. I hope I get mine soon. Did you have to fill out anything besides FAFSA before you received it?
