I'm a NYS resident hoping to become an academic physician, interested in orthopedics. I really value academics and research opportunities. Diversity is big as well. My goal as of right now is to match back into NYC. Tuition cost is not necessarily a factor, but I would appreciate any votes, feedback, or suggestions!

SUNY Upstate

Pros:

  • NYS resident tuition
  • ~1 hour away from family
Cons:
  • Not located in a large city
  • Matches less people into orthopedics
  • Slightly lower match rate
  • More of a focus on rural medicine

Temple University

Pros:

  • Located in a large city
  • Higher match rates for both ortho and NYC placements
  • Slightly more access to research opportunities in the areas I want to study
  • Better at producing academic physicians
Cons:
  • More expensive tuition
  • Farther from family
  • Not the greatest area of the city, but this doesn't really bother me

I grew up in the Philly suburbs and went to med school and did my ortho residency at Upstate. It was my first choice on my rank list. Upstate prepared me very well. I am an academic ortho surgeon now. Upstate has a very rich ortho history. A lot of prominent docs trained there (med school and/or residency) and the program and the leadership are well connected. 9/9 of us in my med school class of 150 matched-we all matched. The residents match into very good fellowships of their choice. If you are a NYS resident you get in state tuition which is a huge bonus. If you don’t have to start 4-500 K in the hole that frees you up later to do other things after training.
