Your thoughts?

I have been a graduate student at Tulane for 2 years. In general (feel free to flame me for this) I find Tulane medical students tend be elitist and arrogant. There are definitely those at Tulane that do not fit this mold but my experience has been that the general Tulane student comes from a lot of money and is a spoiled brat. I know that some are flipping out as they read this but keep in mind that I live at the health sciences center and interact with these people on a daily basis. As far a clinical knowledge and skill go I would say that Tulane students are very well trained. Unfortunately many Tulane students have a dismissive bedside manner with seriously impaired patient interaction skills. I know that they teach medical interviewing and foundations in medicine but from what I have seen Tulane students have a lot to learn when it comes to being compassionate. I have seen the dichotomy between Tulane and LSU first hand, while both schools produce excellent clinicians, LSU students tend to have more of a grasp on the humanity of medicine than Tulane students. Personally I think it is a shame, Tulane recently changed Deans and I think that the types of students they are admitting now will, in the long run do a disservice to the schools reputation. More and more I see Tulane jockeying for the position of “the Harvard of the south”. Unfortunately the first step Tulane took was not to refine the clinical skill or compassion of its medical students but to spread an elitist attitude that ultimately reflects poorly on the medical school. For the Tulane class of 2009 who are reading this most of you can’t possibly have an opinion b/c all you know about Tulane is what they tell you in the interview, I have lived with this B.S. attitude for 2 years. I don’t meant to hate on Tulane, but it’s not just me, many people feel this way. Most of the upper class can’t stand the class of 2008. Tulane needs to get back to its roots, when Pisano was in charge of admissions. That man knew how to choose a medical school class, Khan is destroying Tulane.

while i dont work with them every day, my experience with tulane's med students has led me to think the opposite. ive found most to be rather down-to-earth. but again, my experiences are purely social. elitist and arrogant? certainly not more than any other well respected med school student body. if anything ive noticed the grad students being arrogant thinking med students have taken the easier and better paying route. inferiority complex maybe.

Whatever dude, I’m not so ignorant that I think that "med students have taken the easier route", actually it a hell of a lot harder, as for your insinuation of an inferiority complex, I have been excepted to the 2009 class at Tulane so there goes that argument. You admit that your experiences are "purely social" so why are you stating an opinion anyway, you have no basis for it.

I don't know much about either, but I would say Tulane has better reputation.

Go with temple -
jon chaney, Geno's cheesesteaks, T.O!!!

in all honesty though, it depends on where you are from and what you are used to. the south is very different from the north, and NO is very different from a city like Philly. I'm from NO but have lived up north for the past 8 years or so. there is an openness about cities in the North that has yet to brace the South (unfortunately), but at the same time, the way of life is a bit more relaxed. it's a tough decision, but i would say go with what you are used to.

tulane! it's safer (though not by a ton)! plus, i think it has a significantly better reputation.

Don't listen to the doughnut guy--there are a handful of guys like him who hate Tulane and New Orleans and have a bitter, bitter stick up their a**.

Tulane offers a ton of financial aid, scholarships, and military scholarships, and thus all students are not spoiled brats. It's a great school, the majority of student are really happy there.

As for LSU, the student body is no where near as competitive as tulane's. This is a fact

I don't know anything about Temple.

I've interviewed at both schools. In my opinion the level of education at both is comparable. Neither school really has much of an advantage in match lists or price. The facilities available at both schools are decent but not great. For me the choice would come down to location.

Where is this fact sheet that states LSU's student body is inferior to Tulane's 🙄 The tuition is definitely just that.

I agree, if anything LSU's student body is better than Tulane's. They have higher board scores, that’s for sure.

Actually I love New Orleans and Tulane I just think that many of the medical students are a bit pompass. As far as financial aid, what the hell does that prove, everyone takes financial aid and if you read my post you, would clearly see that I didn't call ALL Tulane students spoiled brats just a select group that are screwing up an excellent school. Read b4 you post brain-e-ack.

so homer, you going to tulane, or you get in to lsu also and going there?

When i was applying, i had med students who interviewed at Temple strongly discourage me from applying, so i cannot comment about Temple.

ahh, okay. I have heard those things before. No worries, then.

My girlfriend's parents both went to Tulane, both are on the board now and her mother said the school is in decline. She echoed some of what was posted earlier -- elitest students, not necessarily the brightest (not stupid either), focused on pumping out health professionals rather than scientists, community leaders, etc.

A girl I know was accepted into the MD/PhD program w/ a full ride and said she was not interested -- said some of the same things as above.

Just my 2 cents...

Why did you apply to Tulane if you didn't like the school so much? Just curious, and not trying to offend.

I applied b/c I live in LA and wanted to keep my options open. When I first moved here Tulane seemed alright but since moving here I have become increasingly dissatisfied with Tulane, mostly with the student body there just not the kinds of people I want to spend 4 yrs with. All in all Tulane is a good school, but IMO its going in the wrong direction.
