Temple vs Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Both are pretty good schools so congrats on that! I would however place extra weight on the fact that VTC is a true pass fail, so it will be less cut throat between classmates and will be more eager to work together with you and such.

Thanks! I'm leaning towards VTC but the only thing that I am worried about is that it's a new school so it's not that well known. Do you think that's a big enough reason to pick Temple over VTC?

I would definitely go for the more established school, Temple. VTC is too risky.

I would say Temple because it has a more established curriculum that we know works because people do well here. They have a great match list and many opportunities for research in many different fields since they are pretty big. PBL makes me nervous too simply cause I like to stick with what I know and I like the idea of being able to watch lectures at home and learn on my own time. Also, the unsafe area of Temple isn't that bad since you can call a security escort at any time.

Congrats on your acceptances! 🙂 Both schools are great programs. BTW, did you go to Second Look at VTC in March? Here's some food for thought from a fellow interviewee:

Education: By listing non-mandatory lectures and online recorded lectures as pros, it indicates that your learning style is more a self-paced/on-your-own approach. Is that correct? If so, then you might find PBL (required attendance) and small lectures, which VTC considers one of its "strengths," as a hindrance to your learning style. More so, as far as your cons for both schools, the majority of those for Temple are ancillary to their tried and true curriculum; however, most of the cons listed for VTC are hallmarks (PBL and small class size) of the program.

Research: Both schools offer excellent opportunities with multiple research centers. At Temple, these research centers are located within Philadelphia. Also, Philadelphia is a hub of medical research just by virtue of its medical school density. At VTC, many opportunities exist in Roanoke, but a number of them require commuting to the main Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg (45 min drive away).

Takeaway: You can't go wrong with either school, but if I were you, I'd pick Temple as it seems to win out based on the information you provided.

mrose85 made some great points. PBL team based learning is not for everyone. I met a student who was more of a self learner that attended a PBL heavy school and he was not happy about required PBL attendance and felt he would be much better off studying on his own at a more traditional program. Think a lot about your learning style and go where you feel it is matched well with the curriculum focus. Also PBL heavy schools tend to be really passionate about their approach to learning. No style is better, both work depending on the individual's strengths and weaknesses.
