Nienna- AFAIK, no one has heard anything. We've been hoping for information about the wait list ever since the first round of acceptances, but no one on the forum has been able to offer any news. However, I do know that a lot of places will still call people in around now, and even later into the summer, so don't give up yet!

Actually it was supposed to be Highlands3 (I had 3 highland cows) when I first started using the name 10 years ago, but I made a type-o😉 Now I use it all the time because I never have to worry about the name being taken!

Not reall ahead of the curve, I'm just so totally bored that I'm desperate for something to occupy myself with over the summer when I'm not working. I haven't had a summer off from school in 2 years and I don't know what to do with all the time off!

Nienna, don't give up hope. I know that sometimes they end up calling people the week before school starts. Even heard of people getting a call a week or 2 AFTER school had started.

It stands for Veterinary Information Network. It's essentially a library reserved for only veterinarians, and students in the field. It looks like it even sponsors its own CE courses too.

Guide to the Dissection of the Dog

Physiology of Domestic Animals is the only "required" book. All the rest are listed as "suggested".

the physiology book is very useful 2nd semester first year - but it can be rented or borrowed from the library.

definitely get the dissection guide.

Wheater's can be a good resource, but I didn't use it.

The micro book will be helpful for your homework, but you don't need it.

The immunology book is a waste of time.

well, the micro book is essentially a list of bacteria and their characteristics. So if your micro book has this, it'll probably work fine

Definitely get the dissection guide. The only other one I would recommend would be Duke's Physiology, but you won't need it till spring semester (and, can be found at the library).

I really like to have a book for each class if possible so I bought all of these books when I first started. So, coming from a person who will find a reason to use a book, DON'T buy Immunology. Like said before, it is completely useless, too detailed, and I couldn't even find a reason to even open it.

Like mentioned, you have to have the guide to dissection. That's required. But I also STRONGLY recommend Pasquini's anatomy book. I didn't have it first semester, but I got the large animal one for second semester, and loved it.

I didn't use my micro book much. I would just get that from the library if you think you need it.

I didn't use Wheater's histology book (I used a different one), but I would suggest getting a histology book whether it's this one or another one. I think it could be helpful. If you're on the fence with money, it's not really a necessity.

I agree with the other posters, I didn't use Duke's at all first semester but did second.

Are you talking about the paper? I can't remember any other homework from first semester other than that. But, if it is the paper you're talking about, Dr. Bemis didn't make them do one this year. I don't know if he will in the future, but definitely didn't this year. He just gave them another test, which honestly, I'd rather have to do the paper!😀

We had a paper and 8 case studies. All the case studies were directly from that book. If he's not doing that anymore, then there is really no point to buying it.

For class of 2013, Saturday was team-building activities/ropes course, Sunday was the White coat ceremony, and Monday and Tuesday was orientation about pretty much everything school related (schedule/computers/e-mail/library/labs/clubs/etc.)

I most enjoyed the silly and quirky things my classmates wrote about themselves. Honestly, I didn't care what religion, relationship status, or vet experiences they had, but I did love learning who can put an entire soda can in her mouth, how many digits of pi they had memorized, and which mountains they had scaled. YMMV.

I second that. Anyone who spends at least a semester at UT knows that "the Fort" is notoriously bad at night. West Knoxville has nice places, although it's more expensive. I'm living in south Knoxville, which I think is good because it's still close to campus, and the rent is usually cheaper.

I thought about getting the notecards, but I figure the book was worth the extra 15-20, just because I bet it puts things in more of a context (instead of just GRE-like word memorization). I'm a bit disappointed that so far, it seems like a book made for younger, or less educated students. While I do appreciate it likening words to trains, prefixes to the engines, and suffixes to the caboose (or a cell to a building, with brick and mortar proteins and lipids!), it just feels a bit ridiculous. Anyone else feel the same? Hopefully it gets better the further I get (i'm only 1.5 chapters in).

I'm finding it really useful, but that might be because it's been almost 3 years since I was in school. >< But you're right, it is mostly a rehash of stuff you've already had, but that's just it. The book isn't meant to be a high grade learning book. I bought it thinking it would be a good refresher on terminology and basic concepts of each body system, and it has been very good for that. (The later chapters do get better on the less educated tone, but if you're looking for depth its not there.) It's also mildly relieving to suddenly connect two concepts that I learned once upon a time based on something the book mentioned. It gives me hope that I haven't totally forgotten how to learn.

First, take a deep breath. Classes start Weds, Aug 18th. You will have orientation from the saturday or sunday before that. There is a book list that is time sensitive, but there will be opportunities to pick up books from students or the bookstore later. Also, you could probably find them cheaper online. Miller's guide to the anatomy of the dog is probably the only one that you need from day one. If you have any other questions, I am always available here or by PM

Classes start Aug. 18. Our first day of orientation is Friday, August 13. The white coat ceremony is either Sat. 14 or Sun. 15, they haven't decided which yet. We got a few things in the packet that you should know about:

Due Already:
email Dr. Brace how many guests you expect at the white coat ceremony
email Dr. Brace the name you want on your student nametag

Things to Do ASAP:
send UT your final transcripts including this past Spring
email Dr. Brace 5-10 qualities about yourself you want others to know
do personality quiz online (info. also in packet)

Things you need a form to complete:
send in the form with your white coat size
buy books using the form they should send you in the mail

Do you have the second edition? I don't have answers in the back of my book. The inside cover says they chose not to put the answers in the book and that the answers can only be found on their website.

Unfortunately, you do have to click those every time you log in. And be sure to click "End CPO session" when you log out, or next time it will say you already have an open session. There is a section that should say "VolXpress Statement" and you should be able to see your charges and credits that have been applied.

Yes, you have to click those things every time you log in to Circle Park to view things like grades, schedule, confirm enrollment, etc. But the Financial Aid stuff isn't in Circle Park exactly. Here is how you get to the Financial Aid info:

1. go to utk.edu
2. click "current students" on the left side
3. click "circle park online" on the right side
4. DON'T click "enter circle park online", but click "financial aid web" on the left
5. enter your netID and password

The financial aid info is in there. Let us know if you have any more problems or questions.

Grats to all the new acceptances I've missed! To people asking about places to live, I'm very happy with my place... It's Jonathan's Ridge Apts., kinda mid-price range (they range I think from 500 - 590) & situated in little clusters of 4 apts instead of giant buildings (so we all have our own door, & I essentially have 1 next door neighbor & 2 below), they allow pets (supposed to be up to 2, but they let me bring my 3 cats), & they have a pretty well enforced "quiet time" from I think 10pm - 8am, which of course may not be ideal for some, but I love it. It's a little farther than some places, but I enjoy not being right in the middle of things, & it still is only an 11 min drive to class as long as I leave by ~7:35-7:40.

I can't remember much about other places off the top of my head, but if you start having places you think you may be interested in, feel free to ask about them... I had spread sheets somewhere about all the places I looked at & may be able to find em & give you a lil more info.

My advice... Do not do what I did, lol... I came down & had 2 days over which I looked at ~17-20 places... we seriously just went straight from one to another, to another, to another.

Question for all the current students about text books.

How imperative is it to have your text books in the first few weeks of class? We're not exactly floating in money and I was hoping to wait until fin-aid reimbursement checks went out to order everything. (Don't really like the idea of putting them on a credit card but I could.)
