I'm a Canadian applicant to US medical schools. All schools have certain course requirements, but I dont know what the equivalents of semesters, semester hours, semester credits are. Could someone please explain these them (in terms of hours)?

Also, in general if a school requires 1 year of a certain course, would the course taken during summer suffice?

In the US a summer course generally counts the same as a one semester course. If a certain school requires a year of something, you will need to pick up the other semester in the fall or spring.

Now, there are some universities that offer certain courses in blocks over the summer. For instance, I took the first half of one of my chemistry courses in a 4 week block during the summer and the second half in another 4 week block. It was quite intense! I was in class from 8-4 everyday all summer long! YUCK!!!!! However, I was able to meet my year's requirement in this manner.

At my state school, a course worth 4 credits was counted as being worth 4 hours of coursework during a given semester. I hope that this helps.

A semester usually counts as the coursework that you take during a given term. At my school, the terms are Fall, Spring, and Summer.
