Mercy Hospital Chicago Shooting: 4 dead, including officer, gunman

"Dr. Tamara O'Neal, an emergency medicine physician, and Dayna Less, a first-year pharmaceutical resident, were both killed in the Mercy Hospital shooting.

During the argument, Lopez pulled out a gun and shot O'Neal.

Relatives said O'Neal had been set to marry Lopez in October, but called off the wedding in September. Hospital officials said she was dedicated to caring for her community, and was also dedicated to her church and never worked on Sundays. In a news conference officials described her as, 'The best person ever, really.'"

My heart aches. So tired of people getting killed for no reason. Sad for yet another instance of domestic violence, of violence against women. I think of gun violence as something that happens somewhere else, not in my safe happy place which is the ER. I’m sad that it’s one of our own. A young grad.

Mercy is a rotating site for UIC's EM program and UIC's med students. Really wonderful folks there. I can't imaging having to get back to work to keep the ED running like nothing happened after something like this, but I bet that's what the good folks from UIC are doing.
