I've heard people mention that there is a sample exam you can take at the test center that is shorter than the actual exam, to prepare you for the cpu exam format etc. If this is true, is it the same as the 150 Q disc they send you or is it something else?

If you are referring to Step I, the questions are identical to what's on the CD.

What I found advantageous was the opportunity to become familiar with the test site. Because I had gone through the motions previously, on the actual test day, I knew my travel route, where to park, how early the test administrators would be in, and which part of the test room would have the least amount of foot traffic.

I found it helpful, but it is another $45 or so.

Thanks for the reply, but i dont understand why you would drop $45 to take the same test they give you for free. But then again, any reduction in anxiety is a good thing. Wouldnt they jsut let you bring the disc with you and use that instead?

The only benefit in paying $45 is to reduce anxiety because the questions are identical.

You can always call the center and see if you can sit for the practice exam with your own CD.
