Texans! Where are you applying OOS?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While most Texas schools would be preferable for me, I'm also interested in and thus applying to OOS DO schools and schools that, according to the MSAR, don't have greater tuition for OOS students that also accept a good amount of them.

Honestly, I haven't looked at schools outside of Texas. I don't see myself straying too far though. Can anyone point me towards any strong OOS schools?

Hasn't come time for me, but i really don't want to stay in TX. If it's a better option due to the acceptances i receive then might as well stay in-state.

When it comes time I will be applying solely in TX, FL, PA, NY

👍 This

Except I'm adding Vandy, Meharry, Howard and some DO schools to the list.

As a TX resident, you will 99% of the time have cheaper tuition if you stay in TX. You also stand the best chance of getting accepted in-state. With the exception of being a URM, 99% of all TX applicants who get into an MD school OOS will get accepted to an in-state school as well. I actually wish I hadn't wasted the money applying OOS. OOS is much more difficult to get accepted vs in-state TX.

If you are just trying to increase your odds of being accepted, apply to all TX schools and DO schools. OOS MD isn't worth the time IMO......unless you just have to go to Harvard or something.

In all my years of watching hundreds of pre-meds through the application process, I have only seen 1 TX resident get accepted OOS MD and NOT in-state. He was a URM who got into Meharry (they give strong preference to URM).

Now I have seen plenty of applicants apply OOS MD, in-state, and OOS DO and get multiple acceptances to OOS DO. So if you aren't naturally wealthy, I would concentrate my efforts on all in-state TX schools and DO schools.

I think the above is generally good advice, but if don't be fooled and think that all OOS schools cost 100 times as much as the Texas schools. UTSW was going to cost me just over $100k for four years, but Pritzker, where I'll be attending, is only going to cost about $30k more (despite the significant different in "sticker prices"). Obviously it depends significantly on your personal inclinations, but for me that additional cost is worth going to an OOS school.

In general, OOS schools are going to be more expensive. But if you're really interested in going to some OOS schools, definitely apply - you might be surprised at scholarship/financial aid awards.

I'm a urm and I'm just trying to get in wherever I can. Beside I get a fee waiver because I don't have parents and the government is helping me with my tuition with loans and grants and scholarships. Might as well apply to some oos schools, couldn't hurt.

Do you get a fee waiver for TMDAS

Not everyone is as much of a Bamf as you  I'm actually kinda surprised UTSW would have cost you that much with 10k/year, but Full tuition at UChicago is solid (congrats) - I'd pay the ~30k difference for that too. Chicago is an amazing city 🙂

I was much more focused on the whole "get out of Texas" thing when I was applying to undergrad. Looking at med schools I ultimately decided to only apply in Texas for a bunch of reasons: better admission chances, great schools, cheap(er) schools, close to family/friends, and generally lower cost of living than a lot of other places I'd want to apply. I'd rather have fun in Houston than live like I'm destitute in New York.
