Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, does anyone know when we are supposed to hear about where we are going?

In case there's anyone viewing this thread that doesn't have facebook or hasn't checked the facebook group in a bit, I'm trying to put together a North Texas area get together for MS zero's. If you're anti-facebook or something, feel free to PM me and I'll keep you updated.

I talked to Amanda yesterday and she said they haven't set a firm calendar for next year. But...like Bob said, they are expecting to begin classes around the last week in July. She was going to talk to the associate dean and see if they had decided anything, and then she would send out an email.

I'm kinda bummed I won't be able to make the North Texas get together. Maybe when we have orientation here in Temple we could have a little partayyyy. We will have an infant by then, but maybe we could drop them off at the grandparents and have something at our house. We could also hit up some of the bars here in town as well.

Sean or CPA, what are orientation weeks typically like. Can yall give us a run down on what happens leading up to the first day of class? I have heard about something called Round the Wards or something like that, but have no idea what it is. I know some schools do a retreat type deal...does A&M do this? During this time, are campus classes segregated from one another, or do these events include both classes?

The M2s did a picnic for us on the Saturday before orientation, so we got to meet a few people then. The first morning of orientation was spent largely discussing how none of us slept!

They went over financial aid, transcripts (?!), the curriculum for the next 4 years, student services, etc. There were also some "getting to know you" types of activities which were quite helpful. The middle of the week (like Wednesday) they started with course introduction - anatomy and biochem. Mostly anatomy. It was testable material that came up over and over!

What I wish we had had, but did not, was some "Aggie indoctrination" - as a non-Aggie, I would've liked an hour or two of info on Aggie traditions and the like. Oh, well. All we did on Thursday was have our pictures taken for our name badges - apparently "professional dress" when you're getting your name badge made means coat, tie, shorts, flip-flops!!🙂 Needless to say, it was very low-key.

Friday was, indeed, a ropes course in College Station. It was optional, and I did not go. That evening was the dean's dinner in CS - again, very low-key. Barbecue on the concourse kind of thing. There were tours of the sim center there and a few other things. It was not very exciting, and it wasn't too useful for meeting people. Saturday was the White Coat Ceremony, which was nice.

As far as interaction with the College Station group, the Friday of orientation (optional), the White Coat ceremony, and a field trip they took to Temple a couple of weeks ago is the only contact we have actually had with them, so I wouldn't sweat any of that. Getting to know most of them before third year is kind of pointless.

Hope this helps!

One more thing...you will get a list of "required" and "suggested" books. Do NOT go rushing out and acquiring any of them. Mostly, you won't use them (even the required ones), they are available in the LRU/LRC, people will give you electronic copies of them or sometimes even the real thing, etc. Also, in almost all cases, books that are an edition or 2 behind are just fine (and 1/10 the price). Remember that it will all be obsolete by the time we graduate anyway!

And no, sorry, I won't give you the electronic copies until the week before school starts. You will also get a letter which says the only thing you should read before school starts is the inside of your sunglasses, which is true.😎

Besides, it certaiinly won't do you any good to have the books and read the first 3 chapters or anything, because they skip around, and you may have chapters 32, 41, 17, and 2 on a test.😉

wow that was terribly helpful---thanks CPA!

Yea, it was. Thank you very much for the info!

FAFSA - Do I want to answer questions about my parents??

I don't know. Anyone know if A&M requires we fill out our parents' financial information on the FAFSA? Should I skip it? Would filling it out hurt me in any way?

Skip it. Not needed. It could hurt, not help.

Yea, that is what the financial counselor lady told me as well. She also mentioned the earlier you get it in, the better your chances for things like grants. I got the report back on mine, and it showed that my EFC was not $0...I hope that doesn't effect anything. I haven't done this in a few years, and I wasn't married the last time I took out student loans.

On another note, I know I have mentioned this before, but I really wish I knew the dates of all the events that were previously mentioned. I am hard at work trying to plan a vacation....but it is tough to book anything without knowing dates.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

An EFC > $0 will not affect you. My EFC is quite large, but totally unrealistic for my situation, and my loan grant amount is the total expected cost.

Count on school starting the last week of July. You'll be safe with that (I hope!) I'm still trying to figure out my summer, too.

how about a quick roll call for all those coming to A&M this summer...this includes all the silent folks who don't usually post. after this is done I have a PM to send all of you.

I'm in. Can't beleive i'm actually posting on sdn 🙄

I have a question to Temple students. Is there a gym? And if there is, are there classes like step and cycling? I just had a baby, so big concern to me 😉. In CS there's the rec center from the main university, as far as I understand.

Congatulations x2! A&M/Scott & White, believe it or not, does NOT have a gym. They have a credit union, their own insurance plan, etc., but no gym.

There are many gyms in Temple, ranging from cheap to expensive. We were given info about options for gyms in one of our packets (don't remember which one). The upside is that we don't have to pay the A&M rec center fee (or parking or a couple of other fees). The fees we don't pay would easily pay for a gym membership.😉

I had my interview in Temple. We were told that we get to use the gym at Temple College for free. I'm not sure if it has classes like a regular gym. But we were also told that some students do choose to go to a separate gym that's pretty cheap. I'm an aerobics class kind of person so I was thinking about this also.

yeah i actually looked some gyms up for temple and like temple city itself has a rec center and the annual fee is not too bad. i'm glad i may have potential work out buddies at temple? 😀

It's not free - or at least they told us at orientation that it's not, but it is very cheap. I think some of the guys play basketball over there.

Hey, has anyone else noticed that the academic calender that is posted on the website is two years old? What's up with that?

After an extended absence, I'm back. I apologize to all who have tried to send me PMs, but this is Step 1 semester and things have been much busier for me.

My intention was to send a message to all those accepted, but since it seems like many of those people have matched elsewhere or had other offers. I think it may be easier to do another roll call. Maybe we could keep a running reply list so it's easier to see? I'll start it off.

Once again, congrats to everyone.

Question for you current students....when is the first disbursement of student loan money? Do you get your check in July or in August?

It varies by year, and the schedule will be posted, but I believe it was on or about July 31. It is within a day or two of release of funds. It made for a great Christmas vacation for us!

BTW, I found out that you can join a decent gym in Temple at the rate for SW employees- an anual fee of about $250, plus an initiation fee somewhere b/w 30-75. So, thats not too bad. I don't know how close they are to SW, but I asume it not too long of a drive, since they are in Temple 🙂.

Just thought I would comment on this real quick. I am assuming the gym you are talking about is Gym X. Its the biggest in Temple and the rates you listed are correct. It has its pros and cons, but overall is a great place. It is probably a mile from the hospital...so it is really close. Another gym is a fairly new one called The Source. It is smaller scale, but has all the equipment you need. A definite pro for this one is no waiting to use a particular piece of equipment. I'm not sure of the rates for this place, but I would assume it would be pretty comprable. Again, this is very close to the hospital. Another option is the Summit, which is the city run center. I could probably hit it with a golf ball using a 7 iron. One last option is the Temple College gym. It isn't huge, but again has all the stuff you need. This is the one I use because I teach there...thus get it for free. If you time it right, you can have the place to yourself (typically early in the morning). I know a lot of the ladies like classes, but I don't know too much about them. I do know Gym X has a TON of classes you can attend.

Thanks Mullie for the message. We appreciate your help!

Oh and one more thing...I may be one of the only old guys (is 27 old?), so this may not apply to anyone else. But, if you have young children who will need daycare next year, you need to start calling places NOW. These places typically have waitlists and the good ones can be tough to get into. I am in the process of this and was blown away at how many people are on a waitlist for the fall already.
