Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When is MS1 orientation and what is the first day of class? Also need info on housing in CS (not too familiar with the area)... what 1-2 bedroom apartments are recommended and which ones should be steered clear of? 🙂

Generally, stay away from the apartments geared towards undergrads in College Station (the Gateway, Zone, Reveille Ranch, etc...) unless you don't mind paying much more money than at other places. Stay away from the Gateway regardless. If you decided to stay in College Station do not live in a place on a street with a state name (referring to the ones off of Holleman) since they are the rougher neighborhoods.

Thanks for the info on apartments and areas of CS to avoid. Any thoughts on Bryan housing and areas to avoid? Looking for a safe area in B/CS with reasonable rent (staying away from apartments geared toward undergrad), recently renovated/updated, low crime activity (gated would be nice), and near campus or on TAMU bus route. 🙂

So when is this mysterious PM going to come down the pipes? I'm eager with anticipation...

Does anyone know how long after the match we have to submit our preference for location (CS/Temple/2+2)? I'd really like to come back to CS and Temple for another look before finalising my selection, although I'm thinking Temple for 4 will be my ultimate choice.

What are everyone else's choices for location?

Ha, he is toying with us. Did you end up ranking A&M #1?
Yup. You know I'd love to be sweating it out with the rest of the Texas thread, but thankfully at this point I'm 99% sure I'll be in either CS or Temple in July. The only other possible place I could end up is Baylor, and I feel we're quickly approaching the point where that ain't gonna happen, if it hasn't passed already.

T-town for me...it's where all the cool people are.

Man, it seems like everyone is aiming for Temple. Lame. I'll be doing 2+2 with all the rest of the single kids.

I talked to Amanda in admissions today regarding some pre-req stuff, and asked her when we'd choose our schools, and she said that they'd probably send out the email in mid to late February

Also, I hopefully will be doing 4 in Temple. I'm from the central texas area and would like to stay near... I wonder what factors in our decision they'll weigh the highest if they can't get everyone their first choice.

Married folks tend to get the first choice, as far as I know. Unfortunately Templex4 is probably the most competitive of the options. So who is going to be moving with me in two years? Anyone?

So how did you Temple campus people spend your morning off? Studying...sleeping in, etc?

They actually opened us up at 10. We had class at 11, but I pulled a teenager and woke up at 11:07. 😴I blame it (and everything else) on mountain cedar. Probably had more to do with the clonapine I took last night because I couldn't fall asleep...

Well I'm sure it was some well deserved rest. Plus....you can watch it online, so it all works out.

I hope Mullie's PM isn't as disappointing as the first packet I got from A&M...the bar has been set.

You shouldn't have much of a problem. Just say that you've found a place to live. Remember there will be 70 students in Temple this year, lots o' space.

Filo will send an e-mail around March (that's what he did last year) and you'll go to the same place where you submitted your secondary and you'll fill out a rank list and then state your reasons why you've ranked it that way.

Quick question for those of you currently in school....how much free time do you have compared to what you were expecting to have coming in? I guess another way of asking is how much time were you anticipating having before you started school....and now how much do you actually have?

I anticipated having no free time except to go to church on Sunday AM, date-night with wife on Friday night after 8, and Bible study on Monday PM.

Today I've done a whole 2 hours of studying and plan to do more, but I'm behind.

In anatomy and biochem I'd say I averaged ~5 hours a day outside of class/lab, BUT I was gunning for good grades. I think people got by fine on 2 hours a day unless a test was eminent, and the sky is the limit there.

Don't worry. You WILL have free time. The biggest hurdle is anatomy/biochem, but even then I felt like I had more than enough time to hang out with my wife, do stuff with friends, etc.

how about a quick roll call for all those coming to A&M this summer...this includes all the silent folks who don't usually post. after this is done I have a PM to send all of you.

I will be there!

I will be there!
have we met before? sometimes i feel like it's a really small world, and that there is no such thing as anonymity. or maybe i'm just paranoid. darn, looks like/ as if i've lost it BEFORE even starting medical school.

Hey Mullie I will be at A&M this summer. Is anyone going down during spring break to find housing? If so let me know maybe we can meet up because I will be down looking for housing.

Another quick question for you Temple students...is there designated parking for students? Do you have stickers that allow you to park in the parking lots close to the hospital....or do you have to walk from the building where the labs are?

We have general S&W parking stickers (free!). Parking is catch as catch-can. If you get there early enough, you can park close, but most of us park toward the MRB. On days when they have a big conference at S&W, I've been known to park behind the MRB (but that's been twice). It's not too bad (especially compared to CS)🙂

So who's joined the facebook group? PM me who you are, I'm eager to put some faces to these handles.

I am coming!😀 I'm planning on 2+2.. CS, then either Temple or Round Rock!

Looks like I'm going to A&M! 😀
I'm leaning towards 2+2 CS/Temple, but still undecided.

Has anyone recieved an email from Filo or the admissions department giving some information about our class? I don't think I have even recieved the tablet email.

Sean, did you go to Dave Ramsey this weekend?

I haven't gotten anything yet either. I THINK I remember getting something about tablets, but I can't find the e-mail. Maybe I just read about it on here, and thought I was emailed.

Excited to meet you guys!

Stalker! Yes. It was ALLSOME!

Haha...my wife and I were supposed to hang out with Dan and his wifey...but they headed down to San Antonio. Can't blame them though...we went through his class and it has completely changed my wifes monetary perceptions/spending habits. I remembered yall were in the same Sunday school class, so I figured you had taken advantage of the free trip (I would have). Have you guys set up the envelope system yet...ha.

Ok, another question regarding time management. The staff at TC is REALLY trying to talk me into teaching again next semester. As it stands now, I teach two nights a week from roughly 6-8:30. Would this be feasible? Would it be worth the sacrafice in study/family time for 700 bucks a month?

i could forward this to you if you'd like. it mostly refers you to this website.

Don't worry about it. Honestly, I don't think I am going to get one, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the offer though.

On an unrelated note, I joined the facebook group. Not too many people in there yet. I am the one who's profile picture is of the ultrasound of my unborn son's man parts...haha (can you tell I am happy it's a boy).

have you done the lectures enough already that you don't have to spend much time prepping? how long does grading take?

This is my fourth semester doing it, so everything is pretty streamlined at this point. I look at the slides for maybe 10 minutes before I go to class. The tests are done with these clicker deals so the grading is essentially done for me by the computer. So really there is very little out of class time...mainly only the two hours or so a night.

Sounds reasonable. You might end up having a long night if you really have to study. I imagine you don't have a TA or anyone to fill in for you if you can't make it to class?

No, I sure don't. However, that may be something that I ask for if I agree to come back. I could ask that there be someone there should I need to miss a class or two.

You'll also have a kid to take care of, so being able to reschedule or miss class will probably be important..

Tru dat! Army is turning out to be the voice of reason. Have you found a place to live in Houston yet? It sucks you aren't coming to A&M, but I'm sure it will work out great for you guys down there.

We have a guy in our class who is a PharmD, 3 kids, and drives to DALLAS twice a week to teach at North Texas, so yes, it is very doable, and $700/month is $700/month. Go for it. Anatomy is the main time sink for the fall, and you obviously have a step up on everyone (for the PharmD, he has a step up on everyone for biochem and physiology).

Let me tell you about how crazy the housing situation in Houston is.... ok so I don't have a long story, but it's making me really nervous. I filed an application for the "waitlist" for university housing. Apparently they don't notify you until the month before you move in (!) that they have available housing. Supposedly they will give housing to people who request an earlier month over people who have been on the waitlist first who request a later month... which screws me, since I got on earlier but requested August. Apparently I should have requested July to have a decent chance of getting housing in a reasonable timeframe.

I have no idea if I should just take my chances with university housing or ditch that idea and find a more expensive alternative to guarantee that I'm not living out of my car.

I'm still bummed about not going to A&M. I really feel like you guys would have made awesome classmates.

Hey army, perhaps what you should do is scout out other apartments and at least put a down deposit on one. Granted you probably won't find a better deal than university housing but it won't be that bad. There are a lot of people at UTH that live in apartments other than university housing (myself included) and manage to do okay with money. It's all about budgeting.

You definitely don't want to be living in your car, haha. The way I see it, if you put in a down deposit on another apartment with a move-in date of August, you will at least certainly have a place to live. If you're lucky enough to get an apartment at university housing, then great! All you will lose is the down deposit on the other apartment. If you don't, well, at least you'll have a place to live.

I hope I made some sense. I just don't want you to be stressed out of not having a place once medical school starts. It's stressful enough.

That's good advice. I tried to think of a way to "reserve" an apartment without actually signing a lease... forgot about just putting down a deposit. I guess I'll have to ask around and find a place that will allow me to do that.

Does anyone know if A&M sends out a confirmation to those who matched through TMDSAS to accept the match result, like some of the other schools are doing this week (ie: Tech)? Didn't know if a confirmation and/or packet from A&M might be sent before the email about selecting a location is sent out. Wouldn't want to miss the deadline if there was one.
