Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just signed a lease at Royal Oaks Gardens apartments in Bryan. It seems like a really nice place to live and they give medical students a 5% discount on rent. It's off by itself, surrounded by trees, and accessible by a long private driveway. Plus the management said that many medical students and graduate students live there and therefore tends to be quiet. Also you get a free membership to what seems to be a fully equipped gym. Anyone looking for a place in Bryan/College Station should definitely check it out. 👍

That does look like it'd be a good distance... far enough that the undergrads aren't cramping your style, but close enough that one could ride one's bike on a pretty day. How much are you going to pay per month?

Make sure to mention that you are an incoming medical student for the 5% discount. 1 bed/1 bath (683 ft2) $750 minus 5%=$713. 1 bedroom/1-1/2 bath+study (837 ft2) $800 minus 5%=$760. 2 bedroom/2 bath (900 ft2) $900 minus 5%=$836. Rent includes free washer/dryer in unit, free high-speed internet, free expanded cable with HBO, and free membership to Aerofit Fitness (next door to apartments). The apartments are also on the TAMU shuttle bus route.

I have heard that A&M records all the lectures. Are they available in a format that can be watched on an ipod? I was thinking that it would be cool to download lecture and watch it while working out, while driving, etc. Does anybody do that? Is it effective at all (not as a full replacement for study, but as a way to maximize your time).

they're generally in windows media format, and I haven't figured out any way to do them other than off my computer. Then again, I'm old and somewhat of a technophobe.😕 Some people like to rewatch the lectures (or watch them at times other than class time) but I tend to fall asleep when I attempt to rewatch them!😴

anybody get packets yet? i wonder if we should expect them next week.

You could do that if you could figure out how to convert from .wmv to whatever works on the iPod. However they also record the audio of the lectures that is compatible with iPods.

Another question. I have a TI-89 calculator that I could probably sell for $90-100. I can't imagine why I would need such a calculator in medical school or in practice, but at the same time I would hate to be caught with my pants down.

1. Do you ever need a graphing or scientific calculator in med school or in practice?

2. Am I being a dope because I am feeling nostalgic about my calc? I mean, he was my buddy through all four years of college. Calculus III , analytical chemistry, electricity and magnetism, good times...good times.

no, you do not need a graphing calculator. the $8 version I bought I've used once. Not even sure where it is. Calculus? You took calculus? What's that? OH! Renal stones! Gotcha!😉

But it graphs multivariable functions, integrates, derives, and does everything I need. I even gave it a name...I call him "math-y".

It's like asking Marshall Dillon to hang up his gun belt...

Marshall Dillon is dead.

However, I find it comorting every once in a while to have something with which I feel extremely competent. Medical school has made me feel totally incompetent in many respects, and the things that I was good at in the past (even if I hated them), somehow bring comfort. Keep Mathy.

Ok, so now I feel really conflicted. I am currently a student at BYU. I am going to A&M in the fall.

I just saw the final score for the basketball game A&M vs BYU. A&M wins 79 to 66. How am I supposed to feel about this?

You're supposed to feel ALLSOME!

What were the match day festivities like today? Tears of joy and despair abound, no doubt?

Hey, are there any medical student who live in Kileen? I found a house to rent there for cheap, but I am concerned about the commute. Any suggestions?

so is anyone else getting a health insurance plan with a&m?

and does anyone know if a&m has a login to check your records/financial aid?

I was probably the only M1/M2 around (not by choice). The festivities were not held in the med ed building, but everyone was pretty stoked yesterday. Don't know much else.

There is a guy who lives in Salado in our class - probably not quite as far a commute, but we also have several who live in Round Rock. That amount of commute won't kill you.

I don't think so. I seem to recall getting an email the first week or so of April. It's pretty much the same for everyone. Don't sweat it!

What do they take into consideration when assigning campuses? I am married with three kids, husband's career, and major support system in Waco. 4 in Temple is really my only option if I'm admitted (applying next year). Just wondering. 🙄

They take that kind of thing into consideration. You would be a definite shoe-in for 4 years in Temple, provided you are accepted (which is the hard part!) Good luck!:luck:

Not necessarily. There is at least one person I know who is married with kids who didn't get 4 in Temple, despite requesting it. Personally, I did get 4 in Temple. I think you have to be very specific in making your case for getting what you want. There are definitely a LOT of people who want to stay in Temple!

I just submitted my application for Chappell Hill in Temple. I'm on the waiting list, but I was told I would definitely get the floor plan I requested! Exciting! Anyone else find a place yet?

oh this is a good question. any med students with insights? have you guys been using the A&M plan?

Hey, we are currently in Provo. I am doing 4 in Temple. My wife and I were not planning on moving down until July 10th or so. Is that going to be too late to find an apartment? I need a 3 bedroom, and I am willing to start paying rent in May if I have too. Does anyone have an idea about how quickly apartments fill up in Temple?

I would have some backups in place. Chapel Hill absolutely lied to my wife and I last year. I drove down to Temple JUST to put down a deposit with them after they said (several times) "you'll definitely have a place here." WRONG. I am very happy where I am now, but beware Chapel Hill.

To seelee, I reread your post, and you'll probably be okay given that you need a 3 bedroom apartment which will likely be in lower demand than 1 or 2 bed models, but if I were you I'd start looking a little sooner. Finding an apt here was a little more difficult than I thought it would be. Unless you want to live in luxury apartments (which is a stupid thing to do on student loans, or on your spouse's income for that matter), it'll be pushing it to look in July, I think. But I am also very tightly wound and anal about stuff like this (not for bad reason considering the above story with Chapel Hill).

Is the list posted somewhere? Is that list just for the Temple class, or for the entire '09 class? It looks really good either way.

The '09 class is all 2+2. The first class with Temple all four is '11.

We are getting tons of emails right now about M4's with houses for rent/sale. If anyone woud like me to forward them to you, please pm me with your email address. This applies for Temple and College Station (we're getting both!)

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I paid for my deposit and everything. They did tell me there was 7 people ahead of me on the waiting list, but that not everyone wanted the same floor plan that I did. I thought I had gone early enough!

I'm not trying to scare you, but wow that is exactly what they told me. What a racket. I'm thinking about calling the Better Business Bureau on them 😡. Let me know what happens.

+pissed+:annoyed::bang::bullcrap::diebanana::wtf:

wow, that sucks. when should someone put a deposit down for an apt in CS?

Does anyone know when we should expect our financial aid information. I am an out of state student and the financial aid will play a large role in where I chose to attend. The problem is I have to decide by April 15th because of AMCAS deadlines. Any help would be appreciated.

That's such crap! I live 800 miles away. I can't exactly go to Temple whenever and I'm not sure when I'll get to go again. Don't know what to do now

I would anticipate hearing the first week of April, but I can tell you what it will say...if you haven't received a scholarship offer yet, my understanding is they aren't offering you one (there aren't too many to go around - I'm not certain of anyone who has gotten one!), and the loan offers are for the full amount of the cost of attendance, no matter what your FAFSA shows. Hope this helps!

Sean and Mullie...correct me if you've heard otherwise!

Sean, you must be Mr. Popular in Temple already! My neighbor was over at our house a day or two ago looking at the baby and we started talking about me going back to school. She mentioned they were in the same bible study as you (and I guess Dan and Chana)...their names are Toby and Christina. They live next door to us...super nice people.

Hi,

I am from Pennsylvania and currently go to Pitt. I will be attending the College Station campus in July but have no idea about where I am going to live. I probably won't be in college station for a while and I would not mind having one or two medical student roommates. Do you know of any places I could live? Also can the school assist me with housing?

Thanks

One of the packets you receive will have a listing of apartment complexes and the like. The school will also set up a database-type thing for roomies to look for each other - I think there was a form to fill out if you wanted a roomie in one of the packets.

The school will not directly assist you with housing other than what I just mentioned.

Welcome!:hello:

hey there... i had been in contact with the admissions office, and i think they are deciding on OOS scholarships at the end of the month (which, i guess, means around now). i've been hearing different things, including that they award most OOS a $1000 scholarship so that we are eligible for in-state tuition but i dont know if there is much truth to that... let me know if you hear otherwise! i, too, am waiting on this so that i can make my decision on 4/15...

Well, hopefully they'll pull through for you. You're putting in your deposit earlier than I did too. We managed to find something in June, so don't get too scared yet.

You haven't seen the billboards they're erecting in my honor? "Chuck you can believe in...Dupont/Norris '12"
Yeah Toby and Christina are great people, they're getting ready to have a baby themselves. Small world.

For anyone looking for housing in college station you might find this website helpful

aggiesearch.tamu.edu

You might already know about it, but if not I found it to be really helpful.

as a side note i'm still crossing my fingers:xf: that a spot opens up and I can officially become a member of this group.

I had a few questions? I am going over a projected budget for next year, and living expenses + tuition, fees, etc are going to be greater that A&M's "cost of attendance". I spoke to the financial aid office and they said that their cost of attendance does not take family costs into account.

I am married with three children and I am going to Temple for 4. My wife stays home with the kids. The cheapest rent that I have found for a large enough place is $900/month. We don't have a car note, but we might need to buy another car soon. I can see how the cost of attendance is much larger than what a single student would need, but it is falling short for what my family of 5 requires.

Is there anyone with a family that can comment on this? I know that there are some private loans available, but are they the kiss of death. What options do I have?

Feel free to post here or PM me?
