A lot of people from my MS program at UNTHSC are ranking TCOM as number one even with Texas MD acceptances/pre-matches. Is this common for general applicants? I find it...surprising that people would. TCOM is a great school, but even the 3rd tier MD schools (TT, Foster, etc) are wonderful in the state if given the opportunity to attend.

Perhaps they like the area too much to leave + financials?

It's a poor choice IMO but I guess if you rly rly love the school.....

I will be ranking TCOM as my # 1 next cycle, and will likely do EDP if the admissions folks think I am a strong candidate. If offered multiple pre-match offers, I will almost certainly take TCOM, barring some outstanding interview experiences elsewhere that change my mind (this is unlikely, as I have done a pretty good amount of research already on the schools I will be applying to.)

In my mind, med school acceptance has never been about allo v. osteo or just getting into wherever accepts me...my biggest goal has always been to get accepted at a school who's culture and institutional values closely match my own.

It doesn't mean other schools are bad, they just aren't right for me. It doesn't even mean that I would be miserable at another school, I just feel like TCOM hits all of the points I want in a school, and this means it is the institution where I will have the highest likelihood of success.

4 years at medical school is hard enough as it is...you should do it somewhere where you will be happiest (or least miserable...) All the "prestige" of going to a big name school (DO or MD) can not make up for going through 4 years of hell in a place you are miserable at.

Be sure to keep an open mind next cycle.

Thats cool. I personally think I'd be miserable with an 8-5 daily schedule tho. The students and area was really awesome though. I would not mind going there but it definitely wasn't 1st choice.

Its all preference though. I don't think DO vs MD really matters. If it wasn't for taking COMLEX and OMM classes I would not even second guess a DO school.

I would avoid 8-5 like the plague...

My friend picked TCOM over 2 MD schools simply because she wanted to stay in Dallas, near her family.
