I'm an OOS and I want to apply to some texas schools for many reasons....i do have some ties..but they're very very weak ties (as in my parents went to texas schools and lived there for a bit like 15+ years ago). But I've visited the state before and I like it, so...want give it a try.

I've emailed TMDSAS about LORs that I should send and if they are appropriate or not and received varying responses. I want to send the following three. What does everyone think? They said they'll take 2 and if we want they'll forward an extra third one but no more than that...

1. My Lab Pi, never taught me in a course but he is a professor in the Molecular Cell Dept. Worked for him for 2 yrs about 8 hours/week.

2. Biology instructor, taught me in two biology courses that all premeds take and really likes me.

3. Electrical Engineering design coures professor, I'm trying to pass this as a science LOR which I don't know if it is that great of an idea. But it's a very strong letter (or at least I think it is) and engineering is always on the borderline of science/non-science.

I want to apply to southwestern, houston, san antonio, A&M, and galveston and I'm a CA resident. Which letters (are you) or (did you) submit?

This sounds fine, very similar to what I will be submitting.

As far as Texas goes, it is much more forgiving in considering engineering a science...as ALL engineering courses (computer programming included!) are calculated in your science GPA for TMDSAS

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am fairly confident the actual LOR requirement is AT LEAST 2, and up to 3, with the option of sending a 4th to one additional school

I don't know if I'm reading the website correctly. It says...

"Applicants are required to submit either ONE Health Professions Committee Packet OR TWO individual letters of evaluation"...

and then in another section..

"Participating schools prefer to receive only the required evaluation letters. Additional letters are not encouraged. However, TMDSAS will forward only ONE letter in addition to the required letters."

So to me it seems like 2 required 3 max.. don't know if I'm right. Anyone want to verify?

You two must be very confused, indeed.

Keep in mind, some schools (e.g., UT Houston) have in the past allowed applicants to submit an additional LOR or two directly to them. If you're not sure which three letters you want to include, call the admissions office of each school individually and ask what their policy is on supplemental materials outside the TMDSAS app, b/c I have no idea whether their policies have changed this year.

Correct if I'm wrong but I think that TMSAS has no requirement re: science and non-science letters so your engineering letter would be OK. I'm not sure if you have gotten more info than me, but I don't think you need an another science LOR on top of your bio letter.
