I got an interview invite yesterday and I'm wondering the best way to get myself from Austin to Galveston for it. Hotels are a pain. Flying is a pain. Having no car is REAL pain. I know there must be others suffering like me. Any idea on what they do for people in my situation?

There's always the last resort of paying a taxi to take me there from the airport but with gas prices so high, the tab for that ride will be INSANE. Oy.

Definitely sucks not having a car... You would have to fly to Houston and then you can do the Galveston limo thing to get you into Galveston. Try Greyhound to get on to the island too... Maybe contact AMWA for the spend the night with a student and ask if your student can get you to the school the next day. Most students live around campus so you could probably even walk to the interview.

What does AMWA stand for?

EDIT: Oh snap, that's a savior of a website. But it has't been updated!!! OY!!!

American Medical Women's Assocation. UTMB's local AMWA is coordinating invitee lodging with med students. You'll get more info in the packet they're sending you.

They are adjusting because of last year's fiasco with the match. Schools gave out way too many offers and people latched onto them like no tomorrow. Initially they designed the system thinking that people who got an acceptance to their top school would drop all others but because of very little waitlist movement, it was as slow as molasses.

I hear that UTH and UTSW are changing it up this year to be a bit more conservative with when they hand out interviews and offers. Last year was a guinea pig year (first time they did pre-match stuff), so hopefully they learned from their mistakes.

Ah yes...last cycle's match. It seems so long ago. So many dreams laid waste that night. I can't believe I escaped with my #1. UTMB only took 15, and UTSW didn't take any....thankfully I had ranked them third. Hopefully it will be a more pleasant occasion this time. Even so, applying early never looked so good, and it seems most people have gotten the hint.

Yep yep. Already, 2 weeks ago 2200 apps had been submitted. That's already 1/2 the expected number of applications before the end of July!

Btw, any words of wisdom for us promising applicants? Anything you wish you had known beforehand? 😀

Does anyone know on what date UTSW will start interviewing this year?

No clue. The only thing that I know is they will start giving out invites in August.

Rumor has it that UTSW and UTH only started looking at apps today.

Hey I have my first interview at TCOM tommorow...I was wondering if anyone had any advice or words of wisdom for me. Is their anything special I need to bring? Good luck to everyone else in their upcoming interviews

Just enjoy it. It's very low stress and you may be suprised at how nice the facilities are. You may meet Dr. Routh, the anatomy professor. He's a total in your face jock who is fired up about TCOM. Pretty sharp as well. You will also enjoy lunch at the botanic garden's - the salmon is awesome.

Be ready for a question on DO vs MD. It may not come up in every interview but it did in mine. I gave the politically correct answer, but the DO interviewing me used it as a reason to give his opinion on the issue. It was actually well thought out and nonjudgemental. If you don't know something about DO or OMM, don't panic. They don't expect you to know.

Have fun. Hook'em!

Hi myKudu, miss having you around!! You were blessed as one of the lucky ones that night. There were so many of us who thought we were fine, when in reality, there was nothing left to give on match day. I still hope I join you at UTMB this year, but it's not looking likely. 🙁

see you there!

I'm confused as to what to do. I took the MCAT July 13th and will not have my scores until Aug 15th. I am going to send out my application tonight. I already signed up to re-take the mcat on Sept 8th. I know some schools will not review your application until the new mcat is complete, but that would be all the way until october!! Should I just say on my TMDSAS that I am not going to re-take the MCAT. Then when I get my score and if I feel the need to re-take should I just call the schools and let them know that I going to re-take and please hold my application, do not reject me until I have the new scores from the 2nd mcat. Someone who has been through this please help me!!

Honestly, delaying your MCAT score release (and ultimately your app) to October will cause FAR more damage that whatever score you got from your July 13th test. Essentially, your application may never see the light of day this cycle because not only will Texas interviews be half over at that point, all interviews through November will have been assigned and you will be fighting tooth and nail for December interviews. Then, you have the fact that you'll be interviewing after pre-match offer day, which looking at last year's results is a serious "no-no" for maximizing your chances. UTMB is practically closed off to you (they want to FILL their entire class with pre-match offers, I have no idea why). Other schools will probably say "no more interviews" by that time.

I'd stick with your future July 13th MCAT score. Plenty of people get in with sub-30 scores, but delaying your app is the worst thing that can happen.

Sorry if I put the fear of God into you, I just wanted to give you the facts now instead of being disappointed later. Retaking the MCAT in Sept is definitely more harmful than helpful. Sorry again! 🙁

Of course, I could be totally wrong, but this is my analysis of your situation. I'm sure others will prove me otherwise. 😛

Is anyone interviewing at A&M tomorrow? I RSVP'd but they never sent me additional information. I hope I have interviewers tomorrow...

I'm gonna ditto what he said.

Let's see, we're at the waiting/interview/waiting stage. Be honest and professional at interviews. Don't be cute or cocky, and exhibit a mature confidence that says your life won't end if you don't get in to med school. Check the interview feedback questions and be comfortable with them. Remember that the tour guides are marketing the school, and I don't remember meeting one that didn't rank their school #1 for the match. You'll have the chance to talk to a lot of 1st/2nd years, so I would find a way to contact more upperclassmen. I didn't do that except with UTSW, and I wish I had. Keep doing stuff to add to your CV, in case you don't get in this time....don't go crazy though.

I would say apply early, because I didn't and that made it all the more "exciting", but...duh. I would also say relax, don't become one of the neurotically anxious ones, and for God's sake stop checking your damn LMFU, but this IS SDN, so I'm not going to. Be thinking of what's important in a school to you....in case you have a choice, but also remember that they're all good schools.

It's honestly kinda hard to remember what was going through my mind back then, maybe 'cause I got in...haha. If I think of something, I'll try to post it....good luck all.

TCOM...had a family atmosphere, wonderful admissions staff, the campus was blah (though I didn't get to see inside most of it due to bad weather), the students seemed down-to-earth, gross lab is really nice....not sure if the bells and whistles actually matter though, class size increased from about 155 to 188 this incoming year...so growing fast, curriculum evolves pretty fast..so I'd ask about their plans for it, rotations are quite geographically diverse...might be lots of driving and/or moving, probably considered one ofthe best DO schools in nation, my doc graduated from there...I like him🙂. I have 2 friends who are starting there now...gateway tablet required and PDA required for 1st years!!!

BTW, UTSW sent me an invite a few hours after they told me my app was complete, and I believe it was the case that if you had a 31 and 3.6 or better, you got an automatic invite. Don't know if they'll change taht if they get flooded.

Well, I hope your spirit has fully recovered since then. I remember so many people were confused/angry. Lots of new faces around now. I attended the prematric program here in June. They intrduced us to all the 1st year classes...including cadaver lab. A couple weeks before it started, they opened it up to anyone, but I told them I didn't have the money...so they offered me a stipend with five days to go. I gave my job like a two day notice, but they didn't care...haha. I really like the school...I mean, they have 2 Stabucks on campus, and everyone is very friendly. Anyway..good luck, and glad to hear from you!

I know this isn't the thread for this question, but zulu, you're about to enter med school, do you have any idea how much anatomy you'll be required to learn? I ask because I bought a text and some flash cards. I'm going over the muscles on the face and I question whether we're really going to go into extreme details. I mean, there are over 600 muscles (over 1800 terms when you consider origin and insertion) that are possible to learn. Tag on innervation and I would think it becomes an impossible task to learn. Will they shorten the list of muscles to include just the important ones that will come up in medicine? If not, I'm sure glad I'm starting to study now...

Mmk, so that piece of info is now confirmed. I had an adcom there tell me the same thing in roundabout language. Only thing is that this year they started reviewing apps August 1 instead of sometime in July. Bleh!

adam - you forgot to tag on blood supply 🙂

yes, you learn lots of anatomy. depending on which flash cards you have (i have netters), you need to know everything on them except maybe some of the really minute veins. in addition, you need to know the actions of every one and the common injuries.

Ditto that-muscle, origin/insertion, action, nerve, blood supply (leave anything out?--maybe spelling if they are TRULY evil). Please enjoy your undergrad while you can. There is all the time in the world to learn this once you're actually IN medical school. You may get yourself ahead for....meh... one day...?

Thank you PT school.😀

I know this is for Texas schools only, but I was wondering if any of yall are even applying to many out of state schools. From what Ive seen, everybody that is are applying top 20ish schools as a stretch. I have a pile of secondaries for oos schools but Im not really wanting to spend $70-100 on each of them if it is futile. Any insight on a texan's chances out of state, especially from reapps who have tried already. Thanks

Just my opinion, and I'm sure there is anecdotal evidence to the contrary, but Texas residency is a HUGE advantage for you. On the flip side of that coin, get the MSAR and look at how difficult it is at so many OOS schools for non-residents to get accepted. But the thing you also have to consider is that while there are non-resident friendly OOS schools, everyone else knows that too, so they likely will be flooded with OOS applications. Honestly, your chances of getting accepted at a Texas school are probably greater than your chances of NOT getting into a Texas school (provided you've applied in a timely fashion) and getting into an OOS school.

Just my .02 though, feel free to disagree with me.

Don't take this the wrong way but with you being a Native American with a 3.9 and a 31 MCAT you have a pretty good chance pretty much anywhere.

Just thought I'd perpetuate the LMFU issue again. I've gotten two invites with no changes to LMFU since 6/15. Anyone else have an LMFU that old? Six weeks baby....😛

Well, for a LFMU update to occur, someone has to CHANGE your file, not just look at it. From what it looks like, some schools actually change stuff on the TMDSAS system, whereas others do not.

thanks for the advice, I tend to agree with you guys. I dont know how my profile got switched to Native american, im not😱, but i must have accidentally changed it when I was updating something (really weird). I dont want to leave texas at all anyways, but i can see how somebody can get unlucky and not get in at all in texas. plus, $40000 per year is slightly ridiculous.... yet another reason that I thank God i'm from texas :banana::banana: (you can never have too much pb&j time)

Hey guys UTH MS 3 here, wanting to wish you good luck this application season. If you interview at UTH you may have me as a tour guide.

We noticed last year that some untrue rumors festered and went a little out of control on this board so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me or ask on this board (but no "My MCAT and GPA are _____ what are my chances?" questions or I'll just delete them), or ask any of the other UTH students on this board. There are several of us.

Without hesitation I'll say that I am happy and excited to be where I am. I'm an MS3 and have finally gotten onto the REAL medical education and so far its been great. Its not perfect and its hard work but I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

So I'll start some myth busting right now.

Someone a few threads back asked about UTH students and Baylor students. This question consistently gets asked and I'll probably post this answer several times in this thread throughout the interview season, as well as answer it numerous times during the tours.

Q1: So how do you feel about Baylor students?

Q2:Wouldn't you have gone to Baylor instead of UTH if you had gotten in?

A1: For the 1st question. To be completely truthful, despite our close proximity to each other we don't have all that much contact. The hospitals we rotate through are seperate and UTH faculty are UTH and Baylor faculty are Baylor. There is no animosity or competition, or "feeling overshadowed." And if anything Baylor & UTH students get along just fine. Several of my classmates room with Baylor students, some are even dating b/w schools and we have a few combined clubs, as well as joint health fair projects. I worked at a clinic for the homeless along side my classmates and Baylor students and it was pleasant. We play IM sports with them, grad students, the public health school, dental school, nursing school. But other than that, we are seperate institutions and both student bodies are too busy living our lives to think about such things. I realize that while you are applying you want to shoot as high as possible, so I understand the concern but its a little misplaced, if you end up in a US allopathic school you'll find that your education will be great no matter what, and whether Baylor, UTMB UTH, Texas Tech etc if you do well in your 3rd year rotations with strong letters, and a good board score students from any MD school will have a fair shake at the most competitive residencies.

Q2: 2nd question, you guys love to ask this question. I can only speak for myself, but feel free to talk with students when you come interview, we are a friendly bunch. When I was in your shoes, yes I applied to Baylor, UTSW and some other out of state "reach" schools for me, and no I didn't get in. Was I disappointed? No, I was ecstatic on match day. Would I have gone to Baylor had I gotten in? At the time yea probably, no one at UTH will deny that Baylor is a 1st rate institution with a great history, but at the end of the day I'm not limited in any way by being at UTH. I'm happy where I am, and in terms of prepping your for Step 1 most of my friends got above a 230, with the highest I know being 265, so we'll prepare you just fine for the important stuff. Would I have been happier at Baylor? I don't know, but if you gave me a no strings transfer ticket over there now or during MS 1/MS 2, I would have refused. I wake up everyday, a little sleep deprived but excited about where I am, what I'm doing and what the opportunities at UTH have opened up ahead of me.

Ok, so I know that won't satisfy all of you but come interview at UTH and see for yourself. We are a great place to get your MD with first rate faculty and supportive atmosphere.

Best of luck to all of you this interview season. I may see you along the way!

(PS. And while I do help out with the interview day, no I don't have any influence on admissions decisions so please feel free to ask/flame away.)

Mikie,

Thanks for posting. I was curious how you got to be a tour guide and how many students in your class get to do that type of thing. Do any third/fourth years get to interview students?

Anything you wish you had known before interviewing?

The interviews at all the schools are laid back. Once you have your first interview you will be relaxed for all the rest for the season. Just try to manage your stress as best you can. Go to the pre-interview social to talk with students. Its a great way to get a feel for the student body.

Oh, the worst thing you can have is an interviewer who talks too much. Don't just sit there agreeing, try to get in your two cents so he'll remember you.

Mikie,

Thanks for posting. I was curious how you got to be a tour guide and how many students in your class get to do that type of thing. Do any third/fourth years get to interview students?

We have a student ambassador committee at our school there are alot of students in all four classes involved. Any student who wants to give tours can do it, as long as they do the training as the med center gigantic and confusing. Try not to take the word of MS 1's too seriously as they are new and don't know a whole lot yet. Ask your more pointed questions about the school to MS 2's, but esp to 3's and 4's.

And no students do not interview applicants, which I think is a good thing in my opinion b/c every student interviewer I got was alot tougher than the faculty.

It's crap that CA and TX have this nice little network of great medical schools reserved for their residents. Spread the love a little to the rest of the country! Dang all these state-rights and independent governments.

Go whine somewhere else. Plenty of other state schools are just as selective, if not more so. 🙄

Several state schools will just plain reject you no matter what your story is simply because your OOS.

People are bitter about Texas schools because we have such cheap tuiton but won't spend the extra energy to apply to 5 more schools for $85 (no A&M or Tech if you hate secondary fees) or all 7 for $195 (incuding secondaries). There is a WAY better rate of return on your money compared to applying to ANY other secondary-fee requiring school, so please, get over it! 🙄

I was being honest. I really do find it surprising that more people don't apply to state schools in Texas. Cost-wise, it's incredibly efficient. Essay-wise, there's the main essay that's easily adaptable from the AMCAS one, and the "diversity" essay was bound to be written sometime. And as for in-state vs. OOS, it definitely beats applying to schools with 10,000 applications.

Then again, I should motivate people to apply to Texas schools next year... :meanie:

Slow around here...hopefully things will pick up next week! I'm personally very stoked about my 2 interviews next week. I'm not letting them reject me again...😉

Well I know for a fact that tech, and uthscsa adcom meetings are on fridays based on my mother working in sa and working for one at tech. I think based on LMFU stuff, UTMB has the same policy.... In that case, I bet this is a pretty universal thing in texas, so lets all get some good news after today:banana::banana:

UTH starts interviews on the 24th...so I suspect people should start hearing from them soon!

tech finally received all my stuff today (even though I submitted months ago)

can anyone tell me how they got their tech email thing? I haven't been asked to set up an account or anything.
