MY LORS FINALLY GOT SENT TODAY!!!

This must be what getting an acceptance feels like, I'm so happy!

Something like that... it's the joy of having your application complete. 👍

Haha finally! Congrats Army! Looks like Nancy is finally getting some work done!

So I just accepted a job as a Research Assistant with BCM-Children's Nutrition Research Center. I really didn't want to do anymore research but it was paying well so I accepted it. Earlier this summer I applied at MD Anderson as a nursing assistant and heard nothing from them. Today I get a call saying that they are interested in me for the position. I don't want to leave Baylor b/c I got the job due to a recommendation from my previous research advisor, so It would look bad on him if I quit already. I reallllyyy want to work at MDA b/c of all the patient contact and all of the great benefits of working there. By the way... I reallllllyyy want to go to UTH. What should I do, I'm so confused????😕

I don't think either job will have any specific impact on getting into UTH as opposed to anywhere else, so don't worry about that. And with your old research advisor, if he really put himself/herself on the line to get you the job you should worry about it, but if he just recommended you it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If you've started training and that sort of thing I would think about leaving research because they don't just invest money in you, they train you and spend time with you and replacing you would be troublesome.

But if working at MD Anderson is what you really want to do, just tell Baylor you've found another position and that you'll have to leave.

just got an invite from tech today, which gives me the options of 8/10 or 8/17 or one much later. how can we get from the airport to the med school? are there taxis, buses? med students with cars? im too young to rent a car!

When you accept, they give you info on local hotels. Some offer transportation from the hotel and to the HSC for free.

Why does Tech give the least amount of notice even though they, in most cases, are located the farthest away from students?

several of the hotels will transport you from the airport and to the med school in the morning. The school will take you back to the airport afterwards, which was a ride I found very informative because a student drives.

Ugh, can I have your Baylor position? I've been applying for the last month and only got one call from a guy at UTH who couldn't give it to me (needed someone for more than a year)...sigh.

I don't remember if anyone's already asked this question, but to those of you who have already went on your interviews, is there anything (besides yourself haha) that is important to bring?

A pen, legal pad, and questions you want answered about their school. I think it's best to try to write down their answers to your questions in front of them. That way it shows you are really interested in their response. But be prepared for an interviewer not to be able to answer the question(s).
Let's see, what else...
don't were cologne or perfume
take some breath mints, not gum
a detailed map of the directions to the school and perhaps one of the campus
cell phone (on silent)
and of course, most importantly, a alternate suit in case you spill piping hot gravy all over myself.

So... don't have any gravy during lunch. Mmk.

I had my TCOM interview yesterday. It was really nice and laid-back which was surprising. Great way to start off on the interview trail. The thing that surprised me the most was how quickly the day passed. My tour time was cut short due to an interview, so this could be the reason but I was able to see the Gross Anatomy Lab which was awesome. 👍

Anyone know if the two motels that SA arranged for us to stay in has transport to and from the airport? 😕

what adamMD said plus:
if you're a girl: flat-bottom shoes
painkillers - you never know what'll come up, and you don't want to be making this face 🙁 during your interview
for UTMB: non-smelly bug repellent. you'll thank me later 😀

i don't know about extra suit though; chances are, you won't get time to go back to the hotel if you do spill piping hot gravy on yourself anyway 😛

So this is a silly question, but when you go to these interviews do you do the tour and all that in a suit?

Lol,neo. Yup, you have to walk around in the whatever+, hot weather wearing a nice suit. 😉 Don't worry though, generally a student will be guiding you around and they are usually cool with you taking off the jacket or putting on different shoes. I totally started bringing a pair of flats last year so I could get out of my heels for the tour...lol. 😀

Has UTHSCSA started giving out interviews for 6/20 processed applicants?

So far, from this forum, I have only noticed 6/13 processed applicants receiving an invite. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think they're taking their sweet time. Or realized that this year they might have to change things up after receiving the second batch of applications.

I know somebody who got an invite from UTHSCSA processed 6/27. She applied disadvantaged, though.

Thanks adammd and newsnsareapain! Fortunately I don't particularly like gravy, but I did already buy heels (along with the conventional black and white suit 🙁) so I guess I'll just bring an alternate pair of shoes. And good call on the bug repellent, I will keep that in mind!

Man I'm gonna sweat so much during my interviews...

I guess I'll bring a small towel or something, but I'll look like an old man.

Lol, a small towel? That's hilarious because it isn't a handkerchief. I’m just picturing this guy getting interviewed that occasionally takes this towel to wipe his forehead. lol. I don't see anything about towel etiquette in any of my med school interview help books. I guess when it comes to towels anything goes.

so like do u take a bag with you or something to take all this stuff in? or like how does it work...some ppl say take extra shoes with you that are comfortable to walk in and stuff....but like......what do u bring that in? a backpack? and then bring that backpack into the interview room?

While maybe not touched upon in the med school interview help books, towel etiquette is pretty well covered in the mother of all guide books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

" A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical
value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

So it seems bringing your towel with you will send a strong message that you have your sh* together-which ADCOMS like. 😉

If you are a dude, as your screenname hints, you are probably best off bringing nothing with you but yourself in a suit, and a pen in one pocket and some breath mints (for after lunch) in the other. I don't know about encumbering yourself with extra stuff, and you should be able to rough it out in some dress shoes for a day.

One of the girls at my TCOM interview brought her new Harry Potter book. She was very nice, but man I tought that was strange.

Lol, that's different...I mean, I love me some Harry Potter, but don't bring it on your interview! LMAO

So I have another question for you guys. My mouth tends to become extremely dry during an interview, so is it appropriate for me to bring a bottle of water?

Also, for those of you who have had your TCOM interviews, I noticed from the feedback section of SDN that they seem to be really fond of the ethics questions. Were you just bombarded with a lot of those questions? They make me nervous.

I'm an undergrad at tech and I interviewed at tech's som last year. if you need a ride or directions or anything just pm me.

Anyone know when UTH will start giving out interview invitations? I know their first interview day is 8/24.

Anyone know when UTH will start giving out interview invitations? I know their first interview day is 8/24.

Seeing as how they really should give us 3 weeks in advance, I'd expect invites from UTH any day now. Maybe even tomorrow! 😀

I dont know about bring extra shoes... just wear some that you can walk in reasonably. For girls... I brought a couple of bandaids for blisters just in case but didnt end up needing them... for TCOM we didnt walk all that much

How do you know their first interview day is 8/24??...that is the same day as my UTMB interview...i doubt they would have the two interviews on the same days, would they?

Why not? If you have two interviews on the same day just get one switched to a different date. Or ask the interviewers to meet you at a jack-in-the-box midway between UTH and UTMB.

If you are planning on staying in a hotel, they all pick up at the airport, and will take you to your interview the next day from the hotel. Call the hotel and arrange. I stayed a La Quinta, and am pretty sure they all do it.

I dont know about bring extra shoes... just wear some that you can walk in reasonably. For girls... I brought a couple of bandaids for blisters just in case but didnt end up needing them... for TCOM we didnt walk all that much

for ladies: I just brought a larger professional looking purse that I could fit more comfortable shoes, (you will most definitely want them and it really doesn't matter what you look like then because you are touring with students who have no power over the decision...), makeup, and the assortment of papers and interview materials we got that day...

for cool dudes: the above

i have a feeling i'm going to hear from a med school tomorrow. *crosses fingers* i hope it's an invite from UTHSCSA, and not just "come fill out our secondary" (unless it's from a screening school)

Guess my waitlist hopes are gone...got a snail mail letter from UTMB that said thanks but were no longer considering your app for the 2011 class. Damn. 🙁 Maybe they'll finally give me an interview now...sigh. I'm not holding my breath.

Anyone know when UTH will start giving out interview invitations? I know their first interview day is 8/24.

How do you know their first interview day is 8/24??...that is the same day as my UTMB interview...i doubt they would have the two interviews on the same days, would they?
