So I was wondering if anyone knew whether top 25 schools (Baylor and UTSW) interviews are going to be more difficult and "challenging" then the other schools have been?

Anyone know from experience, or heard about this kind of thing before? Like are they the type of schools who would ask random as difficult questions, or very broad questions? So far all my interviews for the most part have been extremely chill, and I almost never have had a question that was difficult to answer.

Scared about UTSW this weekend though...

I thought my UTSW interview was great, although I was more nervous for it, with it being UTSW and all that. It was my last one, so I also had more "experience", if you want to call it that, but in hindsight I think it was no different from my other ones.

As a matter of fact, I was extremely nervous the whole day and thought it had gone horribly just because I was tense, but I got in, so apparently I didn't do anything that bad.

From my first interviewer I got questioned about politics in my native country...I was surprised by that but also prepared (I keep up with the news and I love reading the political pages) since I had mentioned growing up elsewhere in my application. We spent a lot of time on that. After that he proceeded to ask me what I liked to do for fun, if I had any hobbies, and whether I'd been to the movies lately (not kidding). My second interviewer asked me what I thought the greatest problem in healthcare was and how I would go about fixing it. I rambled on in circles about there being no clear solution, and she kind of smiled and said "Well, you're right, if it were easy to solve it we would have done that already." So even if they ask you difficult questions, they don't expect you to solve the problems of the world by yourself, they just need to know you have some insight and that you are not a weirdo.

Of course, it also depends on the interviewers that you get, but I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about something that is out of your control. Just prepare for the worst and hope for the best, and relax. In fact, you should take that advice for any interview.

Baylor interviews were surprisingly relaxing for me, mostly conversational. As for Southwestern, the questions I got asked were somewhat harder than what I encountered along the interview trail, but like Baylormed said, it really just depends on who you get. Both my interviewers were nice, it's just that one of them came off as somewhat intimidating. And of course, at both Baylor and Southwestern (pretty much everywhere really) I get the "what do you think is a problem with our current healthcare system?" question. But that's really as hard as it gets (unless you get a rather unusual ethics question).

In sum, I don't think it really makes a difference whether it's a top school or not, the kind of questions you get asked just depends on who your interviewer is. Hope that helps.

My UTSW interview was really laid back but I think I thought that because I didn't really want to go to school there anyway (you know I love you, baylormed 🙂 )

My Baylor interview was some kind of hellish. I got pimped about Shakespeare (no I'm not kidding) in my first interview and during my second one I had a coughing fit (I was getting over bronchitis). It was so bad we had to stop the interview so I could get some water. I was all sweaty and red by the time I came back, an absolute disaster. But the questions themselves weren't all that bad (at least in the second interview). It really does depend on who you get. When you come to Baylor, ask some of the med students who your interviewers are. I recognized at least one name and it was this extremely sweet professor; I felt like I was able to calm their fears alittle.

We're all super excited whenever interviewers come so feel free to ask us anything.

I had a weird experience at Baylor. My first interview: great, or at least okay. My second interview was faculty, and he asked me exactly 3 questions and then forced me to ask him questions for the next 25 minutes. He'd say "ask me a question," and I would, and we'd talk about whatever that brought up for a bit, and then he'd say "ask me another question." Asking questions is not really my forte - at least it was Baylor, and there were a couple of things I was curious about, but man. I came up with a question every time, but what I want to know is what on earth he was thinking. Did I pass or fail during those original 3 questions? Was he trying to keep me on my toes? Wtf, seriously.

UTSW interviews were spectacular, maybe the best ones I've had yet. They do ask more "typical" interview questions - one of my interviews was the least conversational I'd ever had - but he was still really nice, and I felt like we had a rapport by the end.

I feel like it's all a crapshoot. One of my friends had his worst interview at UTMB, of all places. He actually reported the interviewer to admissions - the interviewer said awful things. Referring to his activities with his church, the interviwer told my friend he "was stupid and naive to believe in God." He also said the assassination of President Bush would be justified, and that he thinks people over 50 shouldn't live, so he provides inadequate medical care to them. I know it sounds made up, or maybe he was "testing" him, but according to my friend it was an hour long rant that he finally walked out of in disgust. Crazy! My UTMB experience was great.

Both my Baylor and UTSW interviews were mixed bags. My first Baylor interviewer came at me hard with open-ended and very touchy ethical questions. The second one straight up told me that I impressed him very much and that I was a shoo-in for the school. At UTSW, my first interviewer kept emphasizing how competitive the school was, like I wasn't going to make it, and I just chatted about random things with the second interviewer.

I think my performance at UTMB was the best, but who knows.

I agree with what's being said above. Everybody has a different interview style and you never know what's going on that evaluation paper at the end. I try not to think about it.

Not officially, but I imagine you could hook up with someone that would help you out. Some folks from our group carpooled to and from Temple. I would get on the phone ASAP and make arrangements if your interview is this week. You don't want to be scrambling the day of your interview.

Agreed! 9 weeks and 2 days for those of us in-state.

I dug through last year's thread, and here's how (and when) the TMDSAS schools notified people:

TCOM - people noticed their status page had been updated by 6 pm on 11/14
UTH - Sent emails starting at 12:08 am on 11/15
UTMB - Sent a "fabulous" PowerPoint presentation featuring music from Rocky at 5 am on 11/15
A&M - Filo sent individual emails to people starting around 9 am on 11/15. Took all morning.
UTHSCSA - of course, sent snail mail. They were postmarked 11/14, but few people received them on 11/15. Most came the 16th and 17th.
UTSW - Sent emails, but apparently not until 11/16.

Most people with acceptances noticed LMFUs in either the second week of October or the first week of November, but we won't go there!

Of course none of this means they'll do things the same way this year, but it's something to look forward to.

Can someone give us a countdown meter? Ok, so I'm a little anxious!

Funny, I didn't even notice. Mostly because I'm praying I won't have to wait until match this year...but I'm sure glad it's earlier, regardless. I was about ready to pull out my hair waiting those extra 2 weeks last year! Lol 😱

EDIT: Oh, and wanted to mention that I'm like 90% sure I scored a UTH research assistant job today!! 🙂 I think I lucked out too, the PI is really nice and the lab is very small but laid-back. Perfect. 😉

Augh, I'm getting tired of waiting for UTH and SW (though the latter is a bit of a long shot).

There were so many interviews given out in July/Aug. and then things just died. Hopefully the next half will be given out shortly. There's only Oct. left before the pre-match offers begin and interviews end in Dec. at most schools.

So I called UTMB today to check whether my application is under review with my new MCAT. The lady was very nice, she said my new score was in and then I heard "oh, this doesn't look right". She said that my application was reviewed with my old MCAT scores by mistake (I had mentioned on TMDSAS that I am retaking), and she will send it to the committee again.
