The jurisprudence exam can be taken at Sylvan Learning Centers now so you don't have to trek to Austin.
You will be requested to come to Austin for an "interview" with your original med school diploma. Understand this is not really an interview and the year I went, I went in scrubs, post call from Parkland while 10 people were there in their finest skivvies only to find out it was a 10 minute final tune up of your application and xeroxing of your diploma. It does take six to eight months to get your license, so get the paperwork in quickly.
I do NOT recommend using FVCS (Federation Verification Credentialing Service) for your Texas license as that can add on another one to two months of time filling out their forms and having your diplomas, letters, etc. sent to them, then having them send it to the state board.
Houston and Austin have two dominant groups (Greater Houston Anesthesia and Capitol Anesthesia) that have long partnership tracks and higher than necessary overhead. There are some small groups smattered in among those two, but the bully of block mentality exists there.
DFW has a couple of large groups (Pinnacle, Northstar) but an even larger number of independent groups that seem to all be doing well with better compensation.
If you are looking at DFW, you can PM me with any specific questions.
