Anyone have any sense of what the current job market is like in Texas, particularly in the big cities? Saturation, ease of finding desirable positions, salary, etc info would be greatly appreciated.

Can only speak to Houston. Currently there are plenty of jobs available as almost all the major hospital chains are expanding and free standings are popping up all the time. It's tough to get a position straight off in the medical center unless you're willing to do academics. Pay varies based on acuity but everyone expects to be making at least $220/hr (except in the freestandings) and a lot of jobs are in the $240+/hr range. Work environment varies widely.

Hah! While it's true both UT and Baylor are expanding their faculty, it's only the best, of course. 😎

Didn't mean to imply otherwise 🙂 Mostly was a comment on the fact that coming into the market expecting the pay typically described is going to mean being outside 610 and in many cases outside Beltway 8. The pay differential between academics and community is brutal in Houston.

Agree with everything that's been said re: Houston. One thing that'll hurt is the expansion of UT Houston and addition of Baylor has created a glut of EM docs in Houston. Good jobs are out there, but its getting a lot more competitive. Lots if free standings, but the pay there is considerably less ($160 give or take).

My experience when looking / calling / interviewing recently far has been:

-Austin (and everywhere commutable from Austin) is Saturated, don't even try
-Everywhere else is hiring.

Offers I've personally seen / discussed so far:
RVUs $140/hr employee, + Benefits
Salary $265k/yr employee, + Benefits
Salary $285k/yr employee, + Benefits
Hourly $170/hr Salary, + Benefits
RVUs Employee, range 160-225, avg 190/hr, + benefits
RVUs IC, range 170-300, avg 230/hr

Most of these places have scribes and EMR, ranges from 1.6 pph up to 3.7 pph with your own personal PA. Malpractice is included in all those numbers. Benefits generally include Health, Dental, and 401K Matching. They usually say that the benefits account for about $25/hr, but I've found it to be more like $20/hr when I do the math. Then there's taxes and group discounts and stuff.

It's all Apples to Oranges to Pears out there, it's hard to make head from tails sometimes.

Don't forget the mid sized cities as well; you can work less, make more money, and travel when you are off.

Also, you can buy a nicer house, live 10 mins from work, send kids to public schools, etc.

There are a multitude of 'mid sized' cities across Texas; almost all are hiring and pay is in the 200-275/hr ranges, sometimes even more.

Waco, Tyler, Lufkin, Corpus, Laredo, San Angelo, Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland/Odessa, EL Paso, etc.

Its not Houston, Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio... but there is no traffic either. The above are either <2 hours to a major airport (Houston/Dallas) or have a decent airport themselves.

I have a house literally in the middle of 10 acres, and I am a 10 minute drive to my Level 1 Trauma/Tertiary Care center. I can also leave my house 1 hour before my flight is to leave; park 100 feet from the door at $6/day, and get on a plane NS to Vegas, Houston, Denver, Dallas, or Austin with the plethora of connections that brings.

Good Luck, welcome to Texas. You can find a job here, and a good one at that!

Dallas has a pretty healthy market for EM docs. I live about 25 minutes outside of the city in a suburb. I am 5 minutes from the airport and can valet my car there 1h prior to the flight - much better than when I was in Chicago and I had to get to the airport 2h prior to the flight.

Pay is less than Houston but more than Austin. :thumb up:

My group is hiring so let me know.

These numbers seem a bit low for Texas, no?

All I know is where I've interviewed, I've been mainly sticking to SA and Austin, and in between. I have a friend up in Dallas who's getting like $200/hr + Benefits, and another that getting like $235/hr all IC based. Kinda matches up with what I quoted above, but who knows...

Those hourly wages translate to much more than the high 200k/yr you quoted

What are the ER job prospects for someone who has completed 1 year of internal medicine internship, 1 year of radiology residency, 3 years of family medicine + ALSO, PALS, ACLS, NRP, ATLS certs?

In Texas, not great. Try Alabama or western TN.

5 years of training in other fields does not an emergency physician make...

But he's got the merit badges that so many of our hospital CEOs think we should have...

It's important to be as competent as an about to start residency med student at resuscitation. Fortunately I have multiple pieces of paper that attest to that. And even better, I get to pay for new pieces of paper every 2-5 years so that the papers stay legible.

You left out "as good as the nurses who teach it"

You can make 200+/hr almost anywhere in Texas. Every position in texas for a board certified doc starts at 200/hr even in Austin. You can get a job almost anywhere but Austin where its more saturated but not difficult if you know the right people. I know both big groups hire in Austin every year and I suspect there are about 10 positions available. You just need to know the right people to get in.

Just to be clear, do the benefits come out of the salary/ hourly wage, or is it in addition to it?

in the texas market, if you are Board certified and working in a reasonably busy ED, the minimum you should pull in is $200/hr + benefits. If you are not, then someone is making alot of $$$ of you.

They are hiring board certified ED docs in Free standing EDs all over texas and the starting is usually 180+/hr IC seeing majority of fast track stuff. This job is a walk in the park for any ED doctor. I have worked in a few and in my 12 hr shifts seeing about 15 pts, I spend about 3 hrs working, 9 hrs being bored to death.

Why anyone would work for less than $200+/hr plus benefits makes little sense. Benefits range from 25-50/hr depending on if they fund your retirement. Liability+health insurance is about $25/hr.

I agree with above post. I am working in community hospital (Texas City, Tx) in ER with no trauma classification in which bad stuff goes to tumble in Galveston or hospital center in Houston. I work for EmCare as employee with full benefits. I make over 200/hr (230's avg)with full benefits. NOT IC.
We have jobs available......signing bonus.....
Texas is a great place to practice.....I'm 20 mins from beaches in Galveston...20 mins from downtown houston
Think ahead and apply now for lic...takes like 6 months...

You eat what you kill. The more RVU you generate, the more private insurance pts you see, the more you will make. It all fluctuates.
