Texas programs in order of competitiveness?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UTSW, UTH, and UTA are probably the most competitive based on location alone.

The rest are all average in terms of competitiveness.

UT-I&O is definitely the most competitive
Yeah but there are fifteen of them now. That dilutes it a little bit.

UTSW Dallas> all other Tx programs in terms of competitiveness. As far as DO friendliness, I recall from interviewing last year that Christus Spohn and JPS had a lot of DOs.

I interviewed at a few Texas programs. I liked a lot of them, but was very surprised at how solid JPS was. Definitely a program to watch.

Second UTH, UTA, UTSW seeming the most competitive based on who got interviews and went (out of small sample size)

I trained at UTSW. Stellar clinical experience, nice city, abundance of independence, crapload of procedures, top notch residents in all specialties, moonlighting.

You get worked, but when you step out you will have an easy transition into an attending job.

What are you basing this on? I'm really curious to know.

Austin's program receive over 1500 applications for 8 spots, while UTSW receives a similar amount (although I heard it was less) for 22 spots. Also, during this cycle people from my school other some other schools have received more invites from UTSW than UT Dell. Objectively it may be the most competitive in Texas based on stats.

Dell seems to be looking for a different kind of applicant.

And by your logic you must think it's harder to get into PA school than medical school, huh?

No.

This is comparing apples to oranges. Students often self select when it comes to medical school vs. pharmacy vs. NP/PA route. Very rarely do people apply to 2 different fields at the same time.

To apply to both UT Dell and UTSW, you just click a button and pay a small amount. Very few EM applicants (especially from Texas) refuse to apply to UTSW because they think it's "more competitive". Therefore, you can use the application statistics somewhat to form your conclusions.

Dell receives a large amount of applications from people in the NE who think Austin would be a 'neat experience'. It doesn't mean it's more competitive because it receives a bunch of applications because kids want a true Texas 'adventure' as their safety school.

I think it was Jefferson medical school or one of the Chicago medical schools that receives among the highest number of applications for medical school admission only because people use it as their 'safety' school. You would never say that either of those schools are the most competitive medical schools in the country.

So, you're gonna be ranking Austin pretty high then?

While this may be true for some applicants, many of these applicants also apply to UTSW as well. I have interviewed at NE places and many applicants applied to both. UT Dell has 8 spots to UTSW's 22. Even if you take out applicants that apply to only UT Dell instead of UTSW, the ratio will still greatly favor UT Dell. By all accounts so far, it is harder to get an interview at UT Dell for most people due to the limited number of spots available.

As for your 2nd example, most applicants apply based on location and rank based on fit + location. Jefferson vs. Harvard/Hopkins for medical school is not the same as Austin vs. Dallas for EM residency. There will never be a perfect statistic to look at because you won't know how applicants will rank programs. The best that we have is number of applications and interviews per spot. You would never know if a program is someone's 1st or last choice.

Location, location, location. UT Austin offers a fairly undercooked EM experience compared to that of UTSW (have personal experience rotating at both programs). More people apply to UT Austin based on location only and not on any merits the programs may have earned in its short existence. I guess I was delving more into the issue of established reputation/prestige and not so much competitiveness with my initial response.
