I am looking at grad schools in Texas and I was wondering if I started school and moved there in Jan. would I be able to apply as "in state" to TCOM?

By the time I start school I will have lived in Texas for 1.5 years.

Thanks for the help...

You would to have owned property for a year. Call tcom they can give u all the details

You don't have to OWN property as the above poster said, but you do need to live here consecutively for 12 months. They'll want to see a lease or some form of documentation showing residency.

In order to be in the 90% resident pool, you have to own property - or have a real job - according to TMDSAS:

http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/medical/residency.html
1. Live in Texas for 12 consecutive months by the application deadline, October 1; and
2. Establish and maintain domicile for 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline, October 1, by doing one of the following:
* Be gainfully employed in Texas (Student jobs do not qualify as gainful employment)
* Own residential real property in Texas
* Own and manage a business in Texas which is regularly operated without intention of liquidation for the foreseeable future
* Be married for one year to a person who has established and maintained domicile in Texas

The other regulation clarifies this further by saying going to school is not enough:

http://info.sos.state.tx.us/pls/pub/readtac$ext.TacPage?sl=R&app=9&p_dir=&p_rloc=&p_tloc=&p_ploc=&pg=1&p_tac=&ti=19&pt=1&ch=21&rl=25
(f) An individual whose initial purpose for moving to Texas is to attend an institution of higher education as a full-time student will be presumed not to have the required intent to make Texas his or her domicile;

Well damn!

I was just going to try and take advantage of a loop hole if there was one.

Thanks for all the help...

Wow. Thanks for providing the detailed info costales.

That's insane that they expect you to OWN property for 12 months. That must only apply to medical school, because all other colleges and universities only require that you reside in Texas for 12 months.

Doesn't make much sense, because only 65% of Texans own property, and individuals who are still in school certainly don't make up a significant portion of that number.

OP, I would call the school and ask to make sure. Even though it's posted on their site, I still don't believe it. Haha.

The vast majority of TCOM students (like myself) attended high school and college in Texas, so resident status was automatic per Option 1 in the TMDSAS rules - no job or property ownership required.
