Hi all! Does anyone know if residency for Texas schools are set in stone at the time of application?

Basically, I pre-matched at one of the Texas schools as a resident even though I'm not currently in Texas because I was a dependent of my parents who are residents. Now that I'm out of school and working out of state, I don't think I'll qualify as a resident anymore. I'm wondering if that will affect my pre-match offer in any way?

Would appreciate any thoughts or anecdotes.

Thanks!

Yup. According to TMDSAS, "Under Texas state law, each person who applies for admission to a Texas public college or university is classified either as a resident of Texas, a nonresident, or a foreign (international) student. TMDSAS makes this determination at the time of application in order to place the applicant in the appropriate applicant pool - resident vs. non-resident."

Nope. IF (big if) there is an issue, your prematch offer will not be rescinded. According to TMDSAS, the only issue from the school might be whether you get charged in-state or out-of-state tuition. But your pre-match offer is good to go...

Awesome, thanks for the clarification. I've also contacted the school so I'll update this thread once I get concrete information.

Hey all,

So I'm currently applying through TMDSAS but I will be moving in a few weeks out of state. Currently, I have been a Texas resident for 2 years and I have worked in the Houston area as a high school teacher. Can you help me understand if I will be considered a Texas resident or not if I apply after moving? What if I apply before I move? I'm confused by the terms below that say "by the application deadline."

TMDSAS website says this:
To establish domicile, you or your parent(s) must meet the following criteria:
  1. Live in Texas for 12 consecutive months by the application deadline, October 1; and
  2. Establish and maintain domicile for 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline, October 1, by doing one of the following:
    • Be gainfully employed in Texas

Thanks!

Looks like with the 2 years working in Texas as a HS teacher, you have established domicile and will be considered a resident of TX for TMDSAS purposes.

I believe it means that as long as you established domicile by meeting those two elements to become a TX resident before Oct 1, you will be considered a TX resident by TMDSAS.

If all else fails, contact TMDSAS for further clarification.
