Last week, I got my acceptance to Pitts. It was my first acceptance, and needless to say, I was ecstatic. However, the more than I think about it, the more I worry. I loved the school when I visited, and if cost weren't a factor, I'd attend in a heartbeat.

If I had gotten the acceptance on Dec. 1st, I would've gone. However, since then, I've reconciled myself with the thought of not getting accepted this cycle. I've been studying to re-take the DAT, and have signed up to take courses to increase my GPA this semester. I've consoled myself with the thought: "At least I have another chance to get into 1 of the 3 Texas schools." And now, that thought still persists in my mind.

The price difference between Pitts and any one of the Texas schools is $150k+. With interest, by the time I finish paying my debts, that'd be ~$300k. That's a lot of money, even considering I'd lose my last year of income if I re-apply.

I really, really want to go to Pitts -- but considering the staggering price difference, should I reapply & hope to get into a Texas school next cycle?

Thanks!

It is very sad to see a post like this. It is a shame that it has to cost this much to go to school (especially for a profession that improves peoples health). However, go with the acceptance; there is no guarantee that you will get in next year or the year after or even the year after that.

You are going into a field that will enable you to pay the 300k off. Did you not get any interviews from any texas schools though? The app cycle is not over yet.

Don't do it. Go to Pitt and become a dentist. There is no guarantee that you will get into a Texas school next year or even the year after that. You could be throwing away years of your life. Texas is getting super competitive every year and its starting to feel like a lottery. I know many people with decent stats who have are still trying to get into a Texas school.

I applied only to Texas schools my first two times. Got multiple interviews and then the wait list run around both times. Third time I just said screw it and applied out of state and got into several schools. Don't waste years of your life on Texas no matter how much better you think your application can be. Pitt is a great school, you should definitely go.

Thank you, everybody!

I've also been talking to my parents about it -- and I think I'll definitely go to Pitts. I love everything about it except for the cost, and you're right: There's no warranty that I would get into a Texas school the next cycle even with an improved application.

@Michigunner: Unfortunately, I didn't get any interviews from Texas this cycle. I was devastated by that. I have a decent cGPA and DAT score, so it must've been my sGPA that brought me down.

You are better off going to Pitts. This was my 3rd time applying and luckily I got accepted to Baylor and Pitts. If I wasn't accepted to Baylor then I would have gone to Pitts. Texas schools are getting really competitive and you shouldn't waste a year for Texas schools. You will be able to payoff that debt in no time.

Thank you for sharing your experience. The Texas schools are definitely getting very competitive, and you're right -- it's possible that I won't get in even next year even if I apply early. (I applied in July this year, which is a bit late for Texas.) I've sent in my Pitts deposit -- so I'm almost definitely going now! 🙂

I totally agree with this!!!! You can make money and pay it off when you get out of dental shool....would you want to wait another year of your life to save some money? Texas schools are getting crazy competitive and now a days. I always wanted to go to a Texas school but its my second year applying and I am enrolled in a masters program in biology in a great TX university and they(dent schools) said I might have a chance next year...might....so go to Pitt and get that DDS/DMD! Congrats on your acceptance! If i get into an out of state school I would def go instead of waiting another year.
