Hi guys! I have been agonizing over this decision and haven't seen this asked recently. I would love to see any arguments you all have about which is really the better school/ better fit as I continue to struggle to rank these two schools.
Lubbock
Advantages:
- Larger Tech campus nearby
- More research opportunities
- More extensive global health opportunities
- More extensive list of electives
- Slightly closer drive to my husband (6 hours rather than 8)
- Has an HEB grocery (ok, this is very minor, but it still keeps jumping into my thoughts)
- Slightly better match list
- Slightly more competitive/ prestigious school
- More constant faculty presence
- High satisfaction scores among student body
- NBME exams
Disadvantages:
- Doesn't have the connection to the border health opportunities that El Paso has
- Flat, boring area of the country
- Conservative town (though still diverse student body)
- Larger class size
- Curriculum not true pass/ fail
El Paso
Advantages:
- Wonderful border health opportunities
- REQUIRED research (meaning I'll actually do it)
- Chance to really come out knowing Spanish because of a lot more exposure
- Liberal town and Liberal school
- I have a prematch! They see me as a great fit, obviously.
- Place with mountains and a lot of natural beauty (I'm an avid hiker)
- Seems like a really supportive place
-Prosections but the option to take part in advanced anatomy over the summer if I decide I want to dissect
- Smaller class size
- True pass/ fail curriculum
- I really Like their longitudinal approach
Disadvantages
- Slightly further from home (8 hours as opposed to 6)
- Not as well established
- Not as competitive/ prestigious
- Not as many research opportunities
Okay, anyone have clarity here? Please help!
