  1. Pre-Medical
Texas Tech (Lubbock)

Pros

  • Very affordable overall, both tuition and cost of living.
  • Strong match outcomes. During orientation they emphasized that because their hospitals have fewer residents, medical students get more hands-on responsibility and exposure.
  • Main Texas Tech campus is right there, so there’s plenty of social life, events, and a classic college-town feel.
  • Go Red Raiders!!!

Cons
  • Feels much more rural compared to Dallas, which is where I’m from.
  • Fewer large academic/tertiary hospitals.
  • ~6 hours from home.

UTMB (Galveston)

Pros

  • From what I’ve seen, stronger match outcomes overall, especially into competitive specialties.
  • Solid clinical training sites, with rotations near the Houston area and access to a larger hospital network.
  • Bigger academic center with better research opportunities.
  • Beach/island environment (water looks a bit green at times).

Cons
  • Higher cost of living and higher tuition.
  • Hurricanes........
  • Still about ~5 hours from home.

Summary
One of the biggest factors for me is cost. I’m unsure which schools are more likely to offer scholarships, and it’s tough because most TMDSAS schools don’t release scholarship information until after Match Day. That makes it harder to factor finances into the decision right now.

Do you want to match into a competitive specialty? Are finances an actual concern (are your parents there for support), or do you just want to avoid loans?

I would like to avoid loans as much as I can. I am gunning for anesthesia as of right now

If you match into a competitive specialty, the loans will not be a huge deal. I would go to the school that will set you up most for the success you want, and that sounds like UTMB. If you wanted to do a less competitive/lucrative specialty then I would say TTUHSC. You’ll be busy with school, but if you like doing things then being rural may also impact you

Just another admitted/applicant student so take this with a grain of salt
