Texas wait list information.....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe that you can call on Monday and most schools will let you know...

They will also send out letters. Last year San Antonio didn't get their letters sent out till early March.

Since acceptances are due Feb 15th, do you just...

Accept the school at which you matched by the 15th and then if you get accepted at a higher ranked school and wish to go there, accept that school? Is it that simple?

does anyone know for sure that we can call tomorrow?

ya i wanna know this too

Call. The school's registrar will tell you the status.

Also, if you want to find out potentiallly why you weren't ranked higher, you should call. You don't get brutally honest awnsers but it helps. You can also talk to people who are familiar with admissions.

If anyone wants to, you can PM your info. I have worked closely in admissions for several years.

But definately call the schools.

And if you are accepted at one of your lower ranked schools, and then get into a higher ranked that you were waitlisted at, then you will have to make a decision. ONce you make a decision, your spot at the other school falls out for you and opens up for someone else. This is why there are people who get into texas medical schools up until the year begins.

last year, i called TCOM the Monday after the match and they told me I was I waitlisted over the phone. When I called UTSA, they weren't helpful at all and I didn't receive my rejection letter until the last week of Feb. so, it just depends on the school.

Does anyone know what the chances are of getting into a higher ranked school off a waitlist, if placed on one? I would like to know!

i thought there was a june 1 deadline for the texas schools to offer admission to someone - does that not apply to the waitlist?

I can double check for you. I will post it in a day or so when I get a response.

I have heard of one person who got into UTHSCSA a week after classes started.

roja, i pmed you. thanks.

FYI, I called the SA admissions office and was told that they're making up their alternate list this week.

Texas Tech will have their alternate list done by "mid-February". They will send letters once the list is complete.

UTHSCSA said they're making the list this week and to either call them on Friday or Monday (or wait for a letter)

UTH has a message that says they're making the list over the next few weeks and that a letter will be going out ~early March

Does anyone have any info about the A&M and UTMB wait lists?

A&M - will be making an alternate list sometime in the next couple of weeks and then sending out letters

UTMB - recording at their office, gonna call back later

Let me know what UTMB says, please. I really want my roommate to be able to go there with me!

I called and they said they will be sending out waitlist/rejection letters in two weeks.

Last year they told me this too... for the entire month of Feb.

I think sometimes things happen and there are delays so don't get too anxious if come two weeks you still haven't heard anything.

Does anyone know if the waitlists at most of the TX schools are ranked, unranked, how many people usually get on them. I am particularly interested in UTSA and UTH (provided I am placed on one there) Thanks!

I was told that the waitlist at UTHSCSA is not ranked. I later found out that it is indeed ranked. However, there can be switching around of the ranks depending on things, like if you live in San Antonio and it's the day before classes start.

FYI...if you make it to a waitlist (I was on SA's last year and live in SA) don't think that you are going to get in off of their list...dont' think that you are going to get the call the week that classes start...if you live in the town where you are waitlisted don't listen to the Dean who says your odds of getting in get better as you near registration and we only invite locals of the waitlist the last week. Don't believe or hope in jack!!! I believed too much in the idea that I'd get in off of a waitlist and got totally screwed last year as I started making provisional plans for my life based on the mistaken belief that I'd get in. DON'T MAKE MY (and others!) MISTAKE!!! Pretend you got rejected straight out and start getting ready for the next application cycle!!! Start studying to retake the MCAT, get your PS rewritten, get more clinical experience, apply early, get on your profs to rewrite your letters starting in April (but do something for them to work with!), take more science classes, get a research position, do what you need to do to get your application improved and in early!
For example, I waited until July 8th for the call to "Come on down and register!" and it never came.
Then I had to deal with the truth...REJECTION. Then I had to get my crap together and start studying for the MCAT in August to boost my scores (the real trick!).
Since all of my time was spent scrambling around starting to study for the stupid MCAT, I did NOT have time to work on my application to TMDSAS or work on the secondaries.
So then...the MCAT comes and since I didn't have very long to study for the test...the doubts start to sink and I wondered if I did WORSE than the 1st time I took the test!
So...I paniced and I waited till my scores came in (thinking..."Oh, I won't apply this year and take some more classes and then REALLY study for the Spring MCAT, apply early next year, I'm not ready anyway this year to start...blah, blah...self doubt...blah blah).

Scores came in and went up 4points...

"Oh crap! Better apply now!"

Then I scrambled to get my application and documents into TMDSAS before November 1st!

My application to the schools didn't get sent out of Austin until November 5th!!!

Scramble scramble...Crap! Gotta finish the secondaries still!!!
Whew!!! Got 'em in on November 1st!!! Skin of my teeth!!!

Wait...

Wait..

"What?!!! They schools aren't begging me to come for an interview?"

Wait...

How...lucky was I?!
BARELY barely made it in and not to my top choice. I would NOT wish the kind of turmoil I went through on anyone...get ready NOW!

But THANK GOD!!! I'm in.

Spare yourselves and move on as though you are NOT waitlisted. Get things in on time, improve everything, be better prepared for interview questions, know yourself...really know yourself.

Okay...so this turned into a venting session...at least I feel better!!!

Good Luck!!! Don't give up!!! Don't let ANYONE steal your dreams!!! It will happen if you don't give up!!!

Godspeed, all!!!

I will have to second what STAC says here. Basically your better off assuming your rejected if you didn't get accepted outright. Yes, there are stories of people who got in off the waitlist but remember there are only a couple of people out of 100 that actually get in off the waitlist.

Awesome post, STAC. Believe me I am already doing this. 🙂 Thanks for the advice. It's true what you said. Better to deal now than vainly hope. Congratulations, man!!

I'll be here cheering y'all on!!!

STAC Excellent words of wisdom. (and Congrats on getting in, even though its not your first choice, still a great feat!)

I would definately second what STAC says. Not only for all the practical matters, but for the more important psychological matters. You can focus more on improving your application, making it stronger and having a plan (much more comforting than months of waiting). You can also repair the bruised ego and get on with life, using all of this as a growing experience.

Believe it or not, the number of people who graduate as MD's that applied more than once would probably surprise you.

If this is what you want to do, then definately do it. Its a tough road the whole way through and this is just one of the stumbling blocks.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

Okay......
I'm in Texas Tech, my last choice not because I didn't like it but because I liked my other three schools better. I've sent in my "I accept you" sheet, but I am really hoping to have been waitlisted somewhere else and then get into that somewhere else.

How many people do schools (partiularly Galveston, San Antonio, Houston) put on waitlists and how many people are typically accepted? Are all Texas applicants notified that they are on the wait list or rejected?

Also, is anybody else going to Tech? There didn't seem to be a posting list and I would like to know if there is anything to do in Lubbock (besides cheap housing compared to other Texas cities.) And maybe it's just because I'm coming from a very urban area like Houston that makes me so tentative and nervous.

Any help appreciated.

~Abbiequeen

I am going to Tech in the fall, and yes, in fact, there is plenty to do in Lubbock- considering you will be in med school after all. I grew up here and lived in Dallas for two years, and compared to Dallas there's not a whole lot. However, if you are into the bar scene, during your free time, or anything outdoors, Lubbock is on par with anywhere else. There is also a symphony orchestra performing regularly, as well as stuff like plays and musicals from Broadway that come through on a regular basis, if you are a little more mature than the rest of us. So, to sum it up, Lubbock isn't New Orleans, but it isn't out in the boondocks like everyone else says.

Keep your heads up... it took me 3 times to apply before I even got an interview. Thankfully I also got accepted the 3rd time around.

I am currently a 4th year now and there are some people in my class who got in the first time who are going to be horrible physicians. Obviously, this is only a few people and say it only to illustrate the point that being waitlisted or taking more than one attempt to get into med school does not mean that you will be any less of a physician than someone who got in on their first attempt. As a matter of fact, the number 1 and 2 rank in my class took multiple attempts to get in.

As for the post by STAC...Get used to the "promises," especially when applying for residency. I have interviewed for residency and am about to make my rank list for the match. It seems like a big game, with all the prgram directors telling you how wonderful you are and how high they will rank you. Of course they tell this to 150 people that are interviewing for 6 spots. So, take STAC's advice...it will be much better to stop studying for the MCAT again or to stop working on your second or third application because you got accepted somewhere...than to assume you will get in off the waitlist, or whatever, and then find out you were not accepted and start the next cycle behind the curve.

I commend anyone who actually read my rambling! Feel free to PM me for anything!

i'm confused... what are the rules of reapplying again? we cannot have the same personal statement at all? do we need to have fresh essays altogether? can we not use the same teacher recommendations or do we get completely fresh ones? what if we are out of college already?

can someone explicate the reapplication process cuz i'm completely confused

Would it help while the schools are making the alternate lists now to send a letter of interest and an updated transcript? That is what non-texas schools say, so maybe that plan would apply here.

abbiequeen, it definitely can't hurt you to send an updated trans (esp if the grades are great) and letter of intent. No one knows if it will actually have an effect, but if there's even a chance it's worth it!

echostation, someone else may have more specific details, but my understanding is that yes, you do need new essays, etc. You need to show the adcoms something different from your previous app. Show that you learned something new, added more experience, something that will make them take a second look at you. If you turn in the exact same app again, how will you get a different result? I think you can use the same recommendations, but see if you can add a new one. Have you done any vol or work this year that can get you another letter? are you sure that the letters you had this year were good?

Best of luck!

Stac: In my dealings with Adcoms this year, UTHSCSA has been more than less than honest with me.

But, TAMU has been very honest with me about all aspects of my application and details, as well as giving great advice. I wouldn't exect anything less from Aggies though. That's what you get for trusting a longhorn. 😀

I?m a reapplicant that got accepted this year to my first choice (UTHCSA). After my rejection and waitlist letters that later became rejections...I accepted advice from different people (mostly TCOM and my college premed advisor) and did the following things:

raised my MCAT 5 points
shadowed a doc last spring
i DID NOT rewrite my personal statement

this is why: my personal statement explained my motivation for becoming a doctor. if your motivations change then its a good idea to change your essay and explain your new motivations.
i did say that shadowing a doc last spring further confirmed my desires to become a doc etc etc etc....but i didn?t change the focus of my personal statement, i just updated it.

It's a crapshot.. I did that and more and I'm still not in, and yes .. yes I am getting really bitter about the situation. I am just really really glad I applied out of state.

Anyways Congrats on your acceptance.

when I applied to all the TX schools last year (I'm a first year now) I didn't complete the process with A&M--I didn't fill out the secondary, only the primary TMDSAS app. Anyhow, I got interview invites at all the other schools including Baylor and I matched with a top choice. Then a week later, I got a letter in the mail from A&M rejecting me stating that next year some of the things I could do was raise my MCAT score (which was above their class average), enhance my extracurrics (my extracurrics are the reason why I got a Baylor interview) among other nonsense. Just thought it was funny. It was apparent they didn't know what was going on nor had read my app because they would have known I didn't fill out the secondaries. How do you reject someone who didn't apply? A&M is a great school. I just thought it was funny. UT didn't make that kind of mistake! 😉

Evo, Evo, Evo. although you are an AG (sort of) glad to see you around.

hook em!

**Checks diploma** yep, teasip it is. 😀

Great to see you around too! 🙂

It is a bitter pill to swallow when one is not accepted. Each person has a story, I changed this and it worked, I didn't change this an dit worked, i didn't change this and it didn't work.

The real key is to look at your application and figure out where your weaknesses are. All of the advice is valid. The one thing I would say is that it is important to not completely change your personal statement but to adress what you have done in the interim. Or how did not getting in affect you? Did it strenghthen your desire? Etc.

And you really have to take a very close look at your application. It is not all grades and MCAT. Especially for those that get interviews. You need to really really look at what is it that will seperate you from everyone else that as good recs, good MCAT scores, good GPA's.

The one thing admissions people have a hard time seperating out are the 'yadda yadda yadda's'. Good MCAT, volunteered in an ER, good letters, decent gpa with a bio major. Premed club. How many people does this describe? Pick what it is in your life that makes you YOU and put it out there.

Even if you think itis 'lame'. Like cocktailing or volunteering to bake brownies for kids, whatever.

And it is very true that many people get in on the 3rd and 4rth try. Its a little voodoo and can completely depend on how reviews your application and the spin they put on it wen it is presented to selection committees.

Also, for those who interviewed at UTHSCSA, make sure you didn't discredit the MS4 interviews. The selection committee often gives these much more wieght than from the attendings. The evaluations tend to be much better with more details and insight and MS4s have usually been around the block enough to see who does well and who doesn't in medical school.... and who they would want to work with and who they wouldn't.

Hmmm.. What happens if you've gotten the odd interview here and there but you still don't make the cut (and in my case, as you know, with some not so wonderful grades)?

Anything new on the wait list front??

I was told that you could call SA last Friday or today (Monday) to see if you had made the wait list. I haven't called yet.
