Well over a quarter of that class is coming from out of state schools. Which is pretty good for the Texas schools, but you may have a point. I went to a high quality private out of state school for undergrad, and my numbers were good, but not super-duper stellar. And I got in, so there's gotta be more in their decision than simply MCAT and GPA...Then again, I didn't get interviewed at a lot of other places, so who knows? It may just be a numbers game after all...
I am really surprised that more Texas med schools don't take students that go to really awesome out of state schools, even if they are Texas residents (maybe less apply or maybe a lot do get accepted but end up deciding to go out of state for med school? I don't know). I've always wondered if maybe the adcoms think you're less likely to stay in Texas to practice if you don't stay in Texas for undergrad. Or maybe like you said, it is just that people in the Texas public universities have higher numbers in general and that's what they want to see. Either way, I think my undergrad school helped me get into UTHSCSA, but it may have hurt me with other schools. It just goes to show how random the whole process really is...
