Textbooks...worth buying?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
General consensus here is no. Except for Netters first year, everything else is pretty much provided for you at DMU.

Second year there really isn't any text to buy either. At some point you should look at getting a copy of McGlamry's.

Other schools have thoughts?

Have you decided what school you are going to? If so, try and get in contact with current students there and they will be able to give you a better idea.

Talk to a variety of second years when you arrive at whatever school you are going to. The majority of the time the class notes and powerpoints are sufficient. I bought a few books and most simply weren't necessary / I didn't have time to read them.

Regarding the Powerpoints, my undergrad classes usually never require the book, but I like to use it for the diagrams and figures (visual learner), are these provided as well. Sometimes the prof puts them in powerpoint, but they are extremely low quality and can't be blown up. Just wondering! 🙂

In general, powerpoints tend to be predominantly images/bolded points. That varies class to class and most classes are taught by more than 1 professor who may have their own style. No comment on image quality (variable) - the library has copies of all the books if you don't want to purchase them.

Is there anyone using the Thieme books? If so, what's your opinion?

I'm sure this varies from school to school and from prof to prof, but what is the general consesus for year 1 and 2? Yay or nay?

I'm curious about this as well since I just joined the NYCPM class of 2017 myself. I was looking at some of the book prices on the website and some are just ridiculous! The only thing that would make me nervous about not getting them is that at my interview the guy who gave us a tour said not all of the lectures are recorded, where other schools record every single one. Any NYCPM upperclassmen that can help us?

Hi, I'm a 2015. All of the pre-clinical lectures during 1st and 2nd year are recorded and uploaded the same day unless there is some sort of technical difficulty.

As for textbooks, you definitely need them for some classes but I would say that lecture notes suffice for most courses. Ask an upperclassman (or your big brother/sister) when you arrive at NYCPM for more specific info!

I would agree that Netter is about the only book you'll want to keep from PMS1 year... unless you are really into research or something.

For boards, just save key notes, buy BRS series, etc.

Well, I have the 4th edition of Netter's in my possession currently...plus Kandel's neural science, Lodish's Cell Bio, and Guyton's Physiology. Although these are prolly not the recommended books for any given class, would you say that they are written at a sufficient level?

No textbooks needed (except Netter for General Anatomy). All of the material is presented through powerpoint (which is where the questions come from).

If you prefer a textbook to supplement your study material, ask your classmates. At least one of your classmates will have a .pdf of the textbook for that class. Also, the school's library will have a copy of the book needed.
