Hi,

I am currently a freshman majoring in Liberal Arts. I plan to change my major to bio or chem in my junior year because I am in a two year community college and I do not want to take any pre-reqs here. I was wondering if any you you guys could recommend any bio/chem/physics/math text books so I can start familiarizing myself with the material.

Thanks!

Well, I am sure there are many books out there but for my classes I had Campbell for bio and for calculus I had Stewart. I can't remember any of the others.

Just out of curiosity why don't you want to take pre reqs at CC?

Thanks for the information.

I have heard so many mixed feelings on pre-reqs at CC. Many people have said that med schools frown upon CC science/math courses because it is not rigorous enough. Even though this may not be true, I would still like to play it safe and just do all my pre med courses at a 4 year school.

Yeah, I understand. However, from what I understand if you are a CC student and take med school pre reqs there before transferring and then do well in your upper division science classes then its more than okay. They know that in some cases that you have to take the pre reqs in order to transfer into a science program at a 4 year university.

What Adcoms have issues with is when an applicant starts off directly at four year school and then takes the pre reqs at a CC. They will ask why didn't you take these courses at your four year.

To be honest you will want to take at least calculus, chemistry and biology at the CC. If you dont then you will be drastically behind and it may take you 5 years to graduate, just something for you to think about...

It is also worth noting that many med schools only accept courses/units from a 4 year accredited university...

Campbell for Biology
Halliday, Resnick and Walker for Physics
Finney, Demana, Waits and Kennedy for Calculus

All AP or easy college level textbooks. All should be very cheap. Get an edition old for Campbell and Halliday if you have to. It will make no difference for your purposes. I would have sent you my old ones and had you just pay shipping if I hadn't just moved and gave them away.
