If there is a square with solid edges (solid lines making a square) inside of a bigger square with solid edges, could the small square be a hole in the object? I don't see how this would be a change in height.
 
From the top, it could either be a hole or a protrusion. Unless you see something sticking out given the front or the end, it's probably a hole.
 
oh ok and if there is a protrusion on the other side it is dashed. What if it is a hole going halfway through that would still be solid right?
 
From the top, if the hole is going halfway through the object, then yeah it'd still be solid, but you'll see a dash from the front or the end.
 
Oh ok. So pretty much a hole going through the whole object isn't a depth change, but it still uses a solid line. Is there any other thing that is a solid line but isn't a single change in height?
 
Only from the top!! Umm... as for the latter, I'm not sure. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
