So, my sdn family, i woke up this morning to the knock of the rumoured fedex man!
was too sleepy to be jumping around, but i think the news is kikking in now
I would just like to thank everyone here for all the advice and discussions. got into the only school i hadn't been rejected from...yeah UCC. they do care abt extra currics significantly as someone(i think med2ucc) had told me ages ago.
well as of now, I am rather confused too. UCC is an appx $70k total cost(vague estimate per yr) and my other option ..UQ(in aus) is appx $50k. however i have the acc.letter from cork in my hands and nothing yet from UQ. you guys think its worth it to pay the deposit and waste the 4000 euro if UQ acceptance comes in? anyone with some insight abt ireland vs australia (i know its posted somewhere..and i'll look into it...but if ne new opinions out there, please share)
is UCC worth the extra 20k a year?
oh n btw it all depends on RBC being nice enuff to give me that kinda $$$$. so i mite just back off from UCC =(

Congrats! I think you definitely disserve it after reading your posts on SDN while we waited for acceptance. If I was in your shoes I would gun for UQ IMHO.

As you may have read a few posts I may a few years ago, I have worked with students at/residents from UQ at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, and have worked with student/junior docs in Cork - overall impression - both had produced quality students/junior docs/residents. Now that I am working back in Canada (via Queen's), I can compare them appropriately and can also validate that you will be pretty much on par with your Canadian counterparts. So education wise, really a toss up.

A few other things to consider:

1) if you can't afford the extra $20k for tuition, let alone the mildly higher cost of living in Ireland, go to Queensland - period.

2) if you can afford the tuition and you have an acceptance at one place and are waiting for the other - wait until the last possible minute to submit your acceptance to Cork - make sure your phone/FedEx accounts are all in working order to prevent delay.

3) Both have amazing lifestyles depending on what you like: Brissie/Brisvegas/Brisbane - sun, fun, laidback people and culture, beautiful sites; Ireland - green, rain, booze, gateway to the rest of Europe

4) only word of ("minimal") caution in going down under - you start and finish in January - 6 months at the end of not working in medicine - you'll have debts to pay off.

Good luck and at least you got in! There are some people still desperately trying...

Let us know what you decide to do.
