hey guys,
i'm trying to think of gift ideas for the professors who wrote my recommendation letters. all i've got so far is chocolate or nice coffee. do any of you have better/more creative ideas?

thanks

i was thinking of doing this also, but i was told that it's not a convention and it's part of their jobs to write rec letters... but if i get in somewhere i'll probably go with it. i think something small is sufficient, or even a simple thank you letter. so chocolate/nice coffee is a great idea. just make sure its something they like (i mean if you never seen them drinking coffee.. i wouldn't get coffee). most people like chocolate. i think for female professors its always good to get flowers. i have one prof who loves ethnic decoration things (he has things from different countries all over his office) so i am considering getting him something small like a candle holder or decorative pen from pakistan.
so there's another idea for you- see what kinda decorations they have in their office and get them something that they could keep in their room.

I got them each a gift card and a box of chocolates with my medical schools seal on them.

Starbucks gift card is good. A coffee cup with the logo of the school you're attending might be good too.

I'm in micro so I"ll probably give GiantMicrobes to everyone, it's dorky but I love em. Maybe that and a little extra something (gift card etc) they can actually use.

These are THE best! Some are freaky-looking though, so you gotta watch out...

I might advise against presents. There was a bit of an awkward moment for me when a few years ago I bought a paperback book (~10 dollar value) for a professor for writing me a letter of recommendation for a big scholarship that I got. He told me he could not keep it and instead put it in the department's library. Perhaps it was a conflict of interest issue?

A handwritten note is always safe and appreciated. It's a classic!

i know, i was thinking it might not be appropriate too, which is why i didn't give gifts in the spring when i was still a student. but now i've graduated and i'm going back up to my undergrad for an interview so i think it's ok to give small presents at this point

thanks for the input!

I'm taking my prof. out for dinner. She's been awesome so it's the very least I can do.
