If you sent a hand-written letter to those who interview you, would you expect a response back? Just curious, I am worried that it is possible that they did not receive my letter, but I feel it would be inappropriate to contact them.

Late response here, but for future applicants that are wondering --> I would email the thank you letter. And in most cases, you will get a response, stating that it has been received. 🙂

Update: If you go the email route and have a gmail account, you can download an Mailtracker for Gmail....then send the email through google chrome and it well tell you when the email was opened....so you will know they got it

For what it's worth, I interviewed at 6 schools. Sent handwritten notes to 5 and emails to 1. Got accepted to the 5 I mailed notes to and waitlisted at the one I emailed.
Coincidence?!?.....

Probably. But still. It's polite to thank your interviewers. The post office doesn't lose mail that often. Put a return address and if it doesn't come back to you, you can assume someone at the school got it.

I talked to a adcom at a Texas school and that person said you should always send a thank you note after interview.

Thanks SDN hivemind for making me think it was a sin to do it last year.

Interviewed at 6 schools, didn' write a thank you letter for any. Got accepted at 5 and haven't heard from the 6th.

FWIW, the 6th program is Western... They might just know/assume I got in elsewhere..

I always felt I adequately thanked my interviewers by looking them in the eye, giving them a good hand shake, and genuinely thanking them for their time. I personally feel that if you do this right then a thank you letter isn't necessary or even helpful.

I sent thank you cards to two schools I interviewed at and didn't to one school. Accepted to all three 😛

Either way, I didn't receive any reply. OP, I wouldn't worry if they received them or not.

I send thank you cards to the entire admissions department (IE, one card per school with a salutation to the admissions dept). They have all taken time out of their weekend to put on the event, not just the specific people you interviewed with. Even the guy who sweeps the floor is incurring extra work on the weekend because of the interview event. They all deserve your gratitude.

IMO sending a thank you just to your specific interviewers comes across as canned and formulaic rather than a genuine expression of gratitude. It makes me think of the scene where we first meet Andy in "The Office."

Seems a bit over the top. They're just doing part of the job they are paid to do, I hope you don't genuinely believe adcoms are going out of their way to handle admissions duties out of the goodness of their hearts.

I believe that thank you letters have no effect on your acceptance. Most interviewers send their reports right after your interview. People at Maryland and NYU confirmed this when I went for an interview. Maybe it can have an effect if you are wait-listed though. It is still nice to do because they most likely wrote a good report about you.

Okay, all you negative people above, are wrong. A Thank you letter is definitely the way to go. Don't do the whole thank you card crap. Too impersonal. Write a single letter, addressing all the people that you came across during your interview, and express your gratitude. Tell them what you liked about the interview date. what stood out to you about the school and the people you met. And where the school stands in terms of your interest. IT might just be that extra something that tips the scales in you favor. This is the adult world ladies and gentleman. You go to an interview? You ALWAYS send in a thank you letter afterwards. #Fact #AdultWorld. Good luck to all my peeps!
