Ok, sorry if this question is a no brainer. But how many thank you letters are we supposed to send out?

--Let's say there were 6 interviews with 2 people each interview! I'm not quite sure what's the recommended: just prog director and chair?

Thanks for the help 🙂

One formal, typed letter to the Program director or chair. It will usually go into your file.

😱 So they should be formal and typed? What if one had sent out some informal, hand-written, actual thank you cards to some people? Does that look bad?

Instead of typed letters, I actually sent formal emails to thank everybody (including the program coordinator). The turnaround time was better because I would send the email as soon after the interview as possible (often the same night), making it easy for the interviewers to remember who I am. I actually got several responses with a lot of feedback because e-mail is such an easy medium for rapid communication.

I saved the formal, typed letter to be sent to the program I was planning to rank #1. I would recommend doing this as soon as you know which program you plan to rank first because many programs submit their rank list very soon after interviews are completed, instead of waiting for the January deadline. I'm sure it's at least somewhat helpful for them to know that you plan on ranking them so highly.
