I am having problems figuring out how to do thank you notes, can you write emails, or are typed, or handwritten letters prefered? do you send them to the person that interviewed you as well as to the PD???
please help

You're not going to find a consensus "take" on this. I would suggest looking the issue up on the "General Residency" thread to read multiple thoughts on the issue. I am sending hand written notes to the PD and interviewers. I think hand written=typed letter>>email as far as quality of communication. Hand written notes are just my style, I like the personal approach. I think emails are convenient, but they don't show that you took any extra effort to thank people.
 
unless the program asks that you correspond via email, i would keep to writing/typing.

2 out of the 3 top tier programs that i have been to recently have explicitly said NOT to send letters.
