Is it true that surgeons are generally regarded as being jerks? I do not typically refer to outstanding stereotypes as a basis for my own opinion.

I'm thinking about plastics, but my personality isn't exactly over-the-top. I don't obsess about sports or hide some sort of xenophobic tendencies in a closet for the sake of "professionalism."

I'm somewhat liberal and eccentric, being happy with making music in my spare time.

Well, "surgeons" is a broad term, and BEING jerks and being REGARDED as jerks are two different things.

Yes, I think there is still a 'surgeon=dingus' stereotype out there. And like all stereotypes, there are some people that fit it, and many that don't.

In my experience, plastic surgeons have been much less 'jerky' than most other surgical specialties. But there are always exceptions.

But bottom line- does it matter? Are you going to choose your field based on what you love to do, or by how some people perceive a group as a whole?
