Welcome, all January 26, 2008, MCATers!!!!

This is your official place to stress, vent, hang out, party, cry, yell, or whatever else you need to do in the week before and just after your MCAT.

As a reminder, when your test is done, you are welcome to come here and discuss your experience with it. Discussing general passage topics is OK- ie, "I had PS passages on circuits, thermodynamics, and optics." However, you are NOT allowed post specific questions or answer choices from your test. Any posts which contain specific information will be deleted, and a 2-week post hold will be placed on your account. Look here for more information on this.

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: to each and every one of you!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if people typically use up the 10 minute breaks in between the sections? I wonder if I should cut my breaks short and just keep chugging along, or take the full break. I may feel rushed if people start on with the next section before me...or maybe I'll be calmer knowing I have the same time anyway. If people start before me, I may be disrupted towards the end when I'm finishing up the section and others are already leaving for their next break😕

guys 2 days left... I haven't really touched a book yesterday or today.... I hope I'm ok lol

I was freaking out 10 minutes ago... and felt I had to cram a lot... but I just took a shower .... and I'm just so calm and relaxed... I feel like 2 days of studying is just not worth it! I'm gonna look over some O Chem and then enjoy myself!

I was freaking out yesterday but now I have calmed down. I am just going over my wrong answer sheet tonight and then forgetting about the MCAT until Saturday morning. I am playing golf tomorrow (if the weather improves) and just hanging out. Good luck everyone. Now, I need to figure out a way to block myself from SDN for the next month.

What are all of you doing after the MCAT. I am gonna be studying...woohoo! Yeah!!!
I have a Virology midterm on Monday and an Art History midterm on Tuesday. I have it so great.... sometimes I other people were as lucky as I am...

Good luck to everyone on the 26th.

btw
It is 1 day, 18 hours, 4 minutes and 0 seconds until Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 12:00:00 Noon (Los Angeles time)

Don't worry, I'm just as lucky. I'll be relearning programming for an interview on the 31st then studying for GREs the week after. I have too much fun, no?

:luck: everyoneeee

Man I can't believe this thing is a day away. What should we bring to the test center just our ids?

Man im so nervous I should of of prepared sooner. Im pretty much going in cold turkey in prep although i took 3 practice exams. I got a 31 29 and a 24(skipped about 10 questions cause I was anxious to see my score). I pretty much don't know any organic chemistry and got about all the problems wrong for them in the 3 practices I took. My verbal is the only thing that is solid right now. It is also my first week back at school and it has been hectic with me running around and starting research as well as having 2 lab classes.

I was thinking about moving the date back but Ive decided to punish myself for not utilizing my time better and slacking. Hopefully it will be a wake up call and will motivate me for may. Anyone else in a similar situation? or am I the only ****** taking it this time? I feel like the practices are much easier then the real thing and I currently feel that i would be lucky to score above a 20 from some of the horror stories ive heard.

Well at least i'll be brining up the curve for the rest of you prepared bastards.

You just need your ID. My test center provided pencils, paper, and an excessively hot room. Good luck everyone, I took it this morning.

i feel pretty confident and am acting super cocky right now b/c i wanna beast this exam. ive already nicknamed my dick the incredible hulk. hahahahhaha, good luck everyone!

Thought id give a stress reliever... I did not intend to start a flame war, I just thought that this was really funny and I wanted 2 post it. If I get suspended for it, then it'll b well worth it.

Cute, and totally tame. Not exactly post-hold worthy.

:luck: to everyone tomorrow. 🙂

Could anyone else not sleep a wink last night.......

I think I got all told like 2 hours of sleep. Sigh. I can't wait to be done with this thing.

I had some trouble sleeping as well, couldn't fall asleep 'til 430am. Had to wake up @ 9 cause the hotel's breakfast buffet stops @ 930 (food > sleep 😀). Anyway, gonna try to snooze a little more. Good luck to everyone taking the exam!

Just wanted to wish everyone :luck: for today. If your reading this right before your exam...maybe you should start reviewing! 🙂

My stomach has been way messed up with nerves! Can't wait to be done with this stupid thing! We're almost there guys!

do i get the honorary first post of reflection??? whoo hooo

I honestly dont know how to feel about the exam.

The physical science was ok I finished with about 2 minutes left which was way slower than any practice test, and I was just really really nervous at the beginning and was drawing blanks on simple calculation problems (though i think i worked them out fine in the end) It just sucked not to have time to go back through a little bit.

VR was really the mystery. I honestly could see anywhere from a 6-12 on that section. I just hope my thoughts made sense, so many of those answers seemed logical.

Biology was ok, finished with plenty of time, but i think it was harder overall than the AAMC's.

Physics and VR were on par with AAMC, bio maybe a tad harder, hope everyone is relieved. I will pray every second of the next 30 days that I dont have to do this again

PS -

HaloAcids passage, Rollercoaster ride?, Satellite, Uranium passage... someone fill the rest

When I was done.. I felt slightly crappy.. b/c it was harder than the AAMCs for sure... I was getting 14s and 15s on the AAMC tests near the end.. and didn't have nearly as much trouble on those as I did on today's test. When I was done... I felt... "oh this was probably THE hard section on today's test... BS will be ok". About the same difficulty as a Kaplan test IMO. The physics on there was a little tricky... chem was fine.

VR- Not bad at all.. surprised actually

Literary Criticism passage, Woodpecker egg attack, Origin of Earth etc.. etc..

BS-

O Chem passage, Gull wings, O Chem passage, cold virus, Phagocyting bacteria, Fly Eyes Antibody Western Blot passage

O M F G.... take any Kaplan test... multiply its difficulty by 100 and there you go...
Never in my life did I predict such a BS section... ^ I don't know what version the above poster got... but honestly, I felt like dying.
I TOTALLY (not even educated guesses) guessed on ALL but 1 question on the "Fly Western Blot" passage... that's what 4 or 5 questions? Minus 4/5 for me right off the bat. I had approximately TWENTY (20) questions marked... just saying... On an AAMC test, I have 6 questions marked max.

Honestly from looking at the 25th thread, I wish I had taken it then... I understand there's a curve... but if you are completely NOT understanding a passage at all... it is high time someone seriously revamped the AAMC or atleast its topic list.... I know what Antibodies are.. I know what a Western blot is... but the level that that passage was written at.. was plain ridiculous. I took Genetics... and still had trouble on that passage. If I had to guess on 4/5 of the questions.... with 15 minutes left.... either I'm a total ******* or there's going to be an okay curve.

I don't even understand how anyone with the "basic sciences" could have gotten through that test.

I think I had the exact same test as you bozz.

PS: I thought this was very hard. It killed my confidence for the entire test.
VR: I thought was pretty easy, but I could be wrong you never know with VR. This is my favorite section
BS: Lots of passage based stuff, only 2 orgo questions. Some stand alone questions about muscles and joints, the joint one I knew nothing about and had to pick one at random. My timing for this section was way off due to so much reading.

I took the test on 9/8/07 and I thought I did pretty well (see below for the truth). I felt pretty bad about this test, I really hope my score didn't go down.

Also not to hijack the thread but does anyone know how soon after taking this test we can sign up for another one. Just a backup plan but I think I will need to take it that dreaded third time.

btw if anyone wants to talk about general aspects of the test, join the chatroom

why would you go to a chatroom? just continue to share you experience on this thread it's helpful to a lot of us.

OMFG... I don't know even know what was worse... the test today.. or the Aug 20th one (I took both)

I totally agree with you. BS was too hard! Even much harder than Kaplan. I think I got the same BS as you. To make you feel any better, neither did I understand the "Fly Western Blot" passage, and had to guess almost every question. Other passages were not trivial either. I just hope the curve is good. I read from the AAMC website that they have some "tester" questions in every section that will not be grated. Does that mean this passage could be one of those testers?

overall that was a hard test. here is the summary:

PS: prolly on par with AAMC practice tests. a passage on roller coaster, acid/base stuff.

VR: i found the passages to be a little bit longer than AAMC but they are definitely easier to read. Again, verbal is verbal, you never know how you did.

BS: this was the toughest section. passages were on gull wing, virus, western blot, drug testing, and a couple of orgo questions. i hope a really good curve on this one.

I am going to pray until I get my score back. For those of you who took Aug 20th one, was it harder or easier than this test?

Overall i felt that test was easier then i thought, but my score probably sucks since i wasn't prepared. There were no surprises in the physics and chem section but i could not finish the test due to bad pacing. Verbal seemed pretty easy and pretty much identical to the practice tests. Biology and orgo felt harder then the practice tests but still manageable had to do significant guessing due to time again. Hopefully I get within range of my practices this time around.

I have a question though. When can we register for another test? I plan to register for one of the may ones but when i log on the site it stays has my registration info for the test i took today, when i can register again?

I agree with you guys. they're not doing a great job putting these tests together.

If the AAMC is going to say that they're testing us on basic scientific theory, it would be nice to get some questions actually testing us on that.

I saw a lot of reusing passages (some similarities from yesterday's test posts) Which is completely bogus...they should invest some of that $200 we pay to actually make better/novel tests. This was my second MCAT and I actually had the same essay prompt that I had 3 yrs ago (computer and alienation)

Question though: I rushed through VR and finished with 8 minutes left (not saying that I did well). I checked the review button and saw that everything was complete (I think???). Did this happen to anyone else?
Assuming that we all had the same VR passages, if you remember your passages, do you mind trying to remind me?
so far,
french argument book, long bio passage, woodpecker, henry james.

thats 4 of the 7

Does anyone know the rest? trying to convince myself that I didn't skip one....

Wow.

I just got back from the exam. I thought that I was well prepared...I took at least 15 practice Full Lengths (Kaplan+AAMC), and I felt confident after each of them.

Here is my take on today

PS - - on par with AAMC exams. Not too bad.

VR - - again, on par with AAMC....not that bad.

BS - - WHERE THE DID THESE QUESTIONS COME FROM???? Based on the posts of the folks that took it yesterday, I should have taken it then. Flies and cold viruses...and 3 Friggin' orgo passages. Someone yesterday said that they had only 1 orgo passage. Even the stand alone questions were terrible. LOTS of genetics...and NO ENDOCRINE OR RENAL questions. I was over prepared for those 2 topics and not one question.

I just hope that the curve is generous. Otherwise....I'll be forking over another $210 in a few months.

What does everyone else think??

I'm in the same boat as you. I think I did very well on VR, okay on PS, but but the time I walked out after BS, I was ready to have a nervous breakdown. The topics just seemed insane to me. I used the examkrakers, kaplan, and AAMC's tests, and some of that stuff I just had to guess on. I'm going to be crossing my fingers for the next 30 days that there is a good curve.

Also, did the AAMC actually change the processing time of the exam to 2 weeks?

so, here I am venting my latent anger, which i though i wouldn't have to do after all those freakin 9 TPR diagnostics and 8 AAMC practice tests.

PS: long and hard. finished 8 secs before the time ran out. pretty confident in scoring 12+. it's good that i don't recheck my answers because i apparently tend to be swayed by the wrong answer every time i amend.

Verbal: thought it was okay. long passages, and i had to guess 2 Q's at the end (woodpecker pecking eggs and rant) because i ran out of time.

BS: was ABSURD! i didn't know basic science involved years of research experience. the only reason, i dare say, that i was able to manage those questions was because of my research experience, working in a lab for over a year and having to do those wet lab techniques like western and stuff. but, even then, those Q's were way off the board. really, i tend to finished the bio section with too much time on the end, but somehow today, i ran out of time, having to guess 3 Q's of those WB, Antibody, Mutant section. Luckily, i had already done the last free standing Q's before hand.

am pretty confident about the PS. Verbal can't tell (you know with those sleezy booty traps). BS was plain obnoxious.

as per the diff verbal passages

1. book criticism
2. geography (with sally failing her geo tests as one of the options in the answer prompt. thought that was pretty funny).
3. evolution
4. ?
5. ?
6. wookpecker
7. aminoacids stereoisomerism (L and R)

no, i think the time for getting our scores is ~ a month.

cheers to all. hope our scores take us all by pleasant surprises.

Well, that was a hard test. I have NO idea how I did. I can't even begin to think of how many I had to guess on. I did have the same version as the other people who listed the topics.

PS: Hard for me. Physics and gen chem are weak areas for me.

VR: I had a terribly hard time concentrating on what the passage was saying. I definitely enjoyed the passages on the AAMC tests more. Usually VR is my strongest area, but after today I am not sure.

BS: I was the most confident with this section, but watch it be my lowest score. I have a bio degree, so maybe it helped me a little. I actually understood the Western Blot section, but had difficulty with another section...I can't think of what it is now though. The stand alone questions were a little difficult

All in all, I have no idea what range to expect. I am so nervous. Why can't they just give us an estimated scaled score at the end like they do on the practice exams? Grrr.... Oh well. My mind is numb from the day and I have physics homework due on Monday that I haven't even started on. Joy! Maybe I should have taken the MCAT yesterday, because I heard it was fairly easy.

Good luck to everyone! Waiting for score release is terrible! :luck:

Thank God it's over. Here is what I can remember.

PS: Roller Coaster Passage, Uranium Synthesis Passage, Some passage about tuning fork/sound pressure, Mystery Potassium Salt, Haloacids etc...

If I recall correctly, my PS section was about 70% Gen Chem, 30% Physics or so (quite a surprise). Overall I thought this was easier than most of the AAMCs. VERY calculation heavy (which could be good or bad...). I think there were maybe two questions from Physics II (no optics!).

VR: Woodpecker, IQ Tests, Literary Critic, etc...
On par with the AAMC tests. Longer but more straightforward passages. Questions were mostly analytical: very few recall questions.

W: Super easy prompts.

BS: 2 OChem Passages,
It sucked. At least 1/3 of this test was upper level genetics. OChem was not bad at all. Discretes were SUPER specific. Much harder than AAMC tests (which sucks when its the last section!) Overall, I'm pretty pissed that the questions were so narrow - hardly any cardiovascular, kidney, endocrinology, nervous system questions!

Overall, I am pretty happy with the way it went, except BS, which really wasn't that bad.

VR really surprised me. I'm usually extremely good at it and didn't feel very confident in my answers at all.

I'm surprised so many people disliked the BS section. I'm not great in o-chem and it showed, but I felt that all of the biology passages were simple enough. I felt good about the biology in there. maybe I'm skewed from having a MS in molecular genetics/immunology/biotech

PS, well.. that's my weak point. I won't even discuss that.

I think Kaplan physical & biology are most indicative.

this test was verrrrryy hard...i felt like it was nothing like the practice exams that ive been taking through kaplan...the most surprising section was BS....seemed like it was all about research rather then basic science concepts!!...

PS-- Of the three sections, I thought this was the most prep-able. The physics was easier than I had expected, although it certainly wasn't easy. No optics or fluids, but a lot of calculations.

VR-- Pretty standard lengths. Nothing stands out as being especially difficult, although I didn't really like the Sally geography question.

BS-- Not good at all. I research fruit fly mutations, and I barely muddled through the Western blot, and the wing phenotype passage didn't go well at all. I also should have studied more viruses. On the other hand, I thought the ochem was fine, and the cold passage was easy enough. Did anyone else think the discretes were incredibly random? I flat-out guessed on at least two (spinal cord and joint types).

PS: Pretty difficult, especially the passages on chemistry. Way more calculations than I expected.

VR: No clue how I did.
i
BS: Didn't think it was too hard except a few hard orgo questions (i cant believe i remembered the tertiary ester hydrolysis mechanism!!). Had 15 minutes left when I finished. Mostly on my strongpoints--genetics, biochem. Then realized with 30 seconds left I hadnt done the last 3 discretes !!
Didn't void though because I'm confident about PS and the rest of Bs was fairly easy for me.

they told you where the current went on the bottom of the passage. I thought the physics was really easy. no cathode ray, particle accelerator etc. Verbal was okay, some of the passages were like 3 paragraphs, but still only did 6 and guess on one. BIO WAS BRUTAL. I CANT SAY ANYTHING ELSE

I wont bore everyone by repeating all of the above... But that was one of the hardest tests I took.. (I took a TON of practice tests)

That bio section was the hardest thing I've ever seen... 3 Orgo passages, not a single question on Endocrine?? Or Circulatory... It was mainly upper level genetics and molecular biology... I was really bummed, I feel like the other sections were okay, but that last section put a sour taste in my mouth... We need to rant more about the Biology section... I'm going out to dinner now, but when I get back later I need to rant about freaking BIO SECTION!!!

Just out of curiosity, for anyone who took the Berkeley Review CBTs, how do they compare in difficulty? I know we get some complaints about the intense difficulty of about a third of our exams, so I'm wondering if they are as hard as the exam today.

Exact same as everyone...Bio was hard. The Wester Blot passage...ehh, I had to make some educated guesses... The Ochem passages were a little on the tough side as well.

No endocrine, little digestive...no circulatory...no cell bio...no nervous system really except one standalone...

Verbal: I thought it was pretty easy, got all the passages done with 2 minutes to spare and was able to review a few questions I wasn't sure about. Felt confident on this section and thats usually good for me based on my aamc tests

phys: definitely on the tough side but not all that difficult.

dam i wish i took the test with someone i know... i am very anal, i want to discuss every question.

This exam was brutal.
Rollercoasters, airbags, some overlookable G-Chem stuff, western blot that still wouldn't make sense even with 15 mins to spare (not to say I breezed through the other Ochem stuff, that was also...discombobulating); some other stuff - a broken chromosome, pepsin, teacher asks 1,2,3, student answers 1,2,3, which did the student answer correctly...so much for inferring from the passages.

The counter on the lower left is a little different from the aamc practice tests and it caught me offguard for the physics section. I was on passage 7 of 7 and figured this was the last page, but there was another page of free-standing questions. I just ran out of time and didn't have the chance to reach the end to review anything.

I took the last paper administration back in August 2006 and the exam today was a different monster. When can I register again...this is awful.

Add another "holy ****, that was brutal" tally to the board.

PS: Rough. Ran myself down on time and had to resort to last-minute random guessing with little to no reasoning (i.e., just filling in answers to prevent blank questions). ~7 or so.

VR: Not so bad. Thinking ~10+.

BS: Uhhh... k. Not as pressed on time, but still not expecting much better than around a 7.

Still hoping for a high 20something / low 30something, but a 26 or 27 or so won't surprise me a damn bit, unfortunately. 🙁

Well everyone seems to think the bio was horrible (me included) so maybe a good curve will help us...

Well everyone seems to think the bio was horrible (me included) so maybe a good curve will help us...

I'm hoping the same. There were about 7 of us on the elevator ride down after the test and we all agreed that the BS totally sucked. I REALLY feel bad for someone who didn't take genetics lecture prior to this exam (I took it and still had trouble with the Western Blot).

Here's my thoughts:

PS - pretty straightforward. Thought it was a little easier than AAMCs

VR - Didn't like the Henry James literary passage but the others were the same, maybe a little longer than AAMC

BS- WOW! Thought it was definitely the hardest. Wouldn't agree that it was harder than any Kaplan test but it was definitely the toughest. I actually liked the Western Blot passage because I just took Mo Bio and it was fresh in my mind. The discretes were incredibly tough. Guessed on 3. Not at all like other AAMCs IMO.

Anyone get the feeling that there was an unusually large amount of OChem on the BS? I also found myself using the periodic table on PS for like every other question.
