I have always side stepped this angle when writing all of these essays because I have always wanted to be a doc, and it is hard to point out a specific event that set my mind. I do have a lot of stories and events that have reinforced it, but can you really spin the essay that way? The UW secondary asks this straight out, and I would rather have the Columbia satisfactions essay any day. Anyone have any advice, or is in a similar situation?

This must be too tough of a question for y'all...

This isnt a general why medicine question...it specifically asks what events lead to your decision to become a doc. I think that most people's experience would point them toward patient care...so why not nursing? Right now I am banking on the shadowing...but what else can you do?

Yeah, I am in the same boat as you with always knowing and that I can't pinpoint a specific time. So I usually take the stance that I have known that I want to be a doctor, and the experiences I have had continually reaffirm this decision. And as for "why not nursing" its my opinion that being a doctor is the best to combine patient care with high level scientific thought. I suppose nursing does that as well, but not to the same degree. Also, patients will always have a different regard for doctors than nurses. As a doctor, I think that patients allow themselves to be most vulnerable when they see you, because they believe you can help. Not always the case for nurses.

Want to read my 500 word essay when it is done? I definetly agree with you...will you say that you have always known?
